Job 31:23-40
23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much.
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness.
27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand.
28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom.
34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

Job 32
1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.
5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.
6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion.
7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
10 Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion.
11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say.
12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:
13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.
14 Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.
15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking.
16 When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
17 I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion.
18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me.
19 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.
20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.
21 Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man.
22 For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

Job 33
1 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.
2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
4 The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
5 If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.
6 Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
7 Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

Job 34:1-15

6. Next to John Huss of Bohemia, came a wonderful son of Italy, the marvelously eloquent Savonarola, 1452-1498. Huss was burned in 1415, Savonarola was born 37 years later. He, like Huss, though a devout Catholic, found the leaders of his people--the people of Italy--like those of Bohemia, against all reformation. But he, by his mighty eloquence, succeeded in awakening some conscience and securing a considerable following. But a real reformation in the Hierarchy meant absolute ruin to the higher-ups in that organization. So Savonarola, as well as Huss, must die. HE TOO WAS BURNED AT THE STAKE. Of all the eloquent men of that great period, Savonarola possibly stood head and shoulders above all others. But he was contending against a mighty organization and their existence demanded that they fight the reformation, so Savonarola must die.

7. Of course, in giving the names of the reformers of this period, many names are necessarily to be left out. Only those most frequently referred to in history are mentioned here. Following Italy's golden tongued orator came a man from Switzerland. Zwingle was born before Savonarola died. He lived from 1484 to 1531. The spirit of reformation was beginning now to fill the whole land. Its fires are now breaking out faster and spreading more rapidly and becoming most difficult to control. This one kindled by Zwingle was not yet more than partially smothered before another, more serious than all the rest, had broken out in Germany. Zwingle died in battle.

8. Martin Luther, probably the most noted of all the fifteenth and sixteenth century reformers, lived 1483 to 1546, and as can be seen by the dates, was very nearly an exact contemporary of Zwingle. He was born one year earlier and lived fifteen years later. Far more, probably, than history definitely states, his great predecessors have in great measure made easier his hard way before him. Furthermore, he learned from their hard experience, and then later, and most thoroughly from his own, that a genuine reformation inside the Catholic Church would be an utter impossibility. Too many reform measures would be needed. One would demand another and others demand yet others, and so on and on.

9. So Martin Luther, after many hard fought battles with the leaders of Catholicism, and aided by Melancthon and other prominent Germans, became the founder in 1530, or, about then, of an entirely new Christian organization, now known as the Lutheran Church, which very soon became the Church of Germany. This was the first of the new organizations to come directly out of Rome and renounce all allegiance to the Catholic Mother Church (as she is called) and to continue to live thereafter.

10. Skipping now for a little while, the Church of England, which comes next to the Lutheran in its beginnings, we will follow for a little while the Reformation on the Continent. From 1509 to 1564, there lived another of the greatest of the reformers. This was John Calvin, a Frenchman, but seeming at the time to be living in Switzerland. He was really a mighty man. He was a contemporary of Martin Luther for 30 years, and was 22 years old when Zwingle died. Calvin is the accredited founder of the Presbyterian church. Some of the historians, however, give that credit to Zwingle, but the strongest evidence seems to favor Calvin. Unquestionably the work of Zwingle, as well as that of Luther, made much easier the work of Calvin. So in 1541, just eleven years (that seems to be the year), after the founding by Luther of the Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church came into existence. It too, as in the case of the Lutherans, was led by a reformed Catholic priest or at least official. These six--Wycliff, Huss, Savonarola, Zwingle, Luther and Calvin, great leaders in their great battles for reformation, struck Catholicism a staggering blow.

Our Hope is Alive/Monday, August 31, 2009

"In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."

Matthew 28:1-6

Our hope is alive today because of the empty tomb.

George Bernard Shaw, while a great writer and playwright, was well-known as an atheist in his day. His writings contain an undertone of rebellion against God and rejection of Scriptural teaching. He championed the socialistic and humanistic causes of his day. Yet at the end of his life, as he looked back on all he had fought for, he had this to say: "The science to which I pinned my faith is bankrupt. Its counsels, which should have established the millennium, led, instead, directly to the suicide of Europe. I believed them once. In their name I helped to destroy the faith of millions of worshippers in the temples of a thousand creeds. And now they look at me and witness the great tragedy of an atheist who has lost his faith."

Shaw's hope for Europe had been placed in a dying and corrupt belief, and Shaw realized that his life had been spent in vain. He had hope in his atheistic beliefs. He had hope that his view of the world was correct. But as he came to the end of his life, he realized his hope was misplaced.

With the world events that surround us daily, life almost seems without hope. World leaders becoming more hostile, the economy's downturn, and the downplay of our alliance with Israel are all reasons some people have become worried. But as Christians, we have hope even in the darkest of times.

Look at verse six from our passage today, "And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay." Christ died on Calvary for our sins, but He conquered the grave and arose three days later.

Our God is alive! Other religions point to a leader, but also point to his grave. Our leader, the Lord Jesus Christ, has an empty tomb, proving His ability to conquer even death. There is no circumstance, activity, change of events, or sudden disaster that takes God by surprise. He has control over all and has the ability to conquer any situation that comes up.

Our hope is alive today because of the empty tomb. No matter how dark things become, how bleak a situation looks, or how troubling the times are, we can remain hopeful because our home is not here on earth but with Christ in Heaven.

That cool, crisp morning that Christ rose from the grave was the same morning our hope became alive. Because our God is alive, we know He is in control of everything. We know His promises are true, and we know that He is coming again to take us home to Heaven one day.

Where is your hope? Is it in a national leader, a global system, or a certain belief? The only hope that is alive today is hope in Jesus Christ. No other hope will be able to withstand the darkest of days in your life. Take time today to remember your hope in God. Remember the next time someone complains about the events in the world that your hope lies with an unchanging, immovable, all-powerful God who has everything under His control.

“On mine arm shall they trust.”
- Isa_51:5

In seasons of severe trial, the Christian has nothing on earth that he can trust to, and is therefore compelled to cast himself on his God alone. When his vessel is on its beam-ends, and no human deliverance can avail, he must simply and entirely trust himself to the providence and care of God. Happy storm that wrecks a man on such a rock as this! O blessed hurricane that drives the soul to God and God alone! There is no getting at our God sometimes because of the multitude of our friends; but when a man is so poor, so friendless, so helpless that he has nowhere else to turn, he flies into his Father’s arms, and is blessedly clasped therein! When he is burdened with troubles so pressing and so peculiar, that he cannot tell them to any but his God, he may be thankful for them; for he will learn more of his Lord then than at any other time. Oh, tempest-tossed believer, it is a happy trouble that drives thee to thy Father! Now that thou hast only thy God to trust to, see that thou puttest thy full confidence in him. Dishonour not thy Lord and Master by unworthy doubts and fears; but be strong in faith, giving glory to God. Show the world that thy God is worth ten thousand worlds to thee. Show rich men how rich thou art in thy poverty when the Lord God is thy helper. Show the strong man how strong thou art in thy weakness when underneath thee are the everlasting arms. Now is the time for feats of faith and valiant exploits. Be strong and very courageous, and the Lord thy God shall certainly, as surely as he built the heavens and the earth, glorify himself in thy weakness, and magnify his might in the midst of thy distress. The grandeur of the arch of heaven would be spoiled if the sky were supported by a single visible column, and your faith would lose its glory if it rested on anything discernible by the carnal eye. May the Holy Spirit give you to rest in Jesus this closing day of the month.

8/30 Trail of Blood

THIRD LECTURE--1400-1600

1. These three centuries, fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth, are among the most eventful in all the world's history, and especially is this true in Christian history. There was almost a continual revolution inside the Catholic Church--both Roman and Greek--seeking a Reformation. This awakening of long dormant Conscience and the desire for a genuine reformation really began in the thirteenth century or possibly even a little earlier than that. History certainly seems to indicate it.

2. Let's go back just a little. The Catholic Church by its many departures from New Testament teachings, its many strange and cruel laws, and its desperately low state of morals, and its hands and clothes reeking with the blood of millions of martyrs, has become obnoxious and plainly repulsive to many of its adherents, who are far better than their own system and laws and doctrines and practices. Several of its bravest and best and most spiritual priests and other leaders, one by one, sought most earnestly to reform many of its most objectionable laws and doctrines and get back, at least nearer, to the plain teachings of the New Testament. We give some striking examples. Note, not only how far apart and where the reformatory fires began, but note also the leaders in the reformation. The leaders were, or had been, all Catholic priests or officials of some kind. There was, even yet, a little of good in the much evil. However, at this time there was probably not one solitary unmarred doctrine of the New Testament retained in its original purity--but now note some of the reformers and where they labored.

3. It is well to note, however, that for many centuries prior to this great reformation period, there were a number of noted characters, who rebelled against the awful extremes of the Catholic--and earnestly sought to remain loyal to the Bible--but their bloody trail was about all that was left of them. We come now to study for awhile this most noted period--the "Reformation."

4. From 1320 to 1384 there lived a man in England who attracted world-wide attention. His name was John Wycliff. He was the first of the brave fellows who had the courage to attempt a real reformation inside the Catholic Church. He is many times referred to in history as "The Morning Star of the Reformation." He lived an earnest and effective life. It would really require several volumes to contain anything like an adequate history of John Wycliff. He was hated, fearfully hated, by the leaders of the Catholic hierarchy. His life was persistently sought. He finally died of paralysis. But years later, so great was Catholic hatred, his bones were dug and burned, and his ashes scattered upon the waters.

5. Following tolerably close on the heels of Wycliff came John Huss, 1373-1415, a distinguished son from far away Bohemia. His soul had felt and responded to the brilliant light of England's "Morning Star." His was a brave and eventful life, but painfully and sadly short. Instead of awakening a responsive chord among his Catholic people in favor of a real reformation, he aroused a fear and hatred and opposition which resulted in his being burned at the stake--a martyr among his own people. And yet he was seeking their own good. He loved his Lord and he loved his people. However, he was only one of many millions who had thus to die.

Christ paid the price, now He offers you the gift.

One of the most well-known figures from the Spanish-American War was Clara Barton. Clara was originally a school teacher who had traded in her books for a nurse's gown when the Civil War broke out. She spent days on end attending to the wounded from both sides of the war. She also helped organize the American Red Cross, an organization committed to helping people through disasters. While she was working in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, she faced a weary American group of troops who badly needed supplies and food. The commander of the group, future President Teddy Roosevelt, asked Clara for some food and offered to pay for it out of his own pocket. Barton denied Roosevelt's offer and told him he could not buy food. Perplexed, the commander tried reasoning with Clara, but she would have nothing to do with it. Clara then explained, "You cannot buy these supplies for your troops, Mr. Roosevelt, for they are not for sale. If you want them, all you must do is ask."

Many people view salvation as Teddy Roosevelt viewed those supplies-they required a price. His men needed the supplies badly and he was willing to do whatever needed to acquire them, yet as Miss Barton explained, all he had to do was ask and he would receive them.

God has offered salvation to all people. Nothing qualifies someone for salvation, nor is there a set of tasks to complete before it can be earned; salvation is a free gift. Salvation cannot be earned any more than Christmas presents require an exchange of money. No one approaches Christmas morning with a stash of cash, ready to purchase gifts from under the tree. A gift is a free present, given without strings or prerequisites.

Many religions teach that eternal life in Heaven must be earned through good works or righteous living. We could never earn Heaven through anything we do. As the Apostle Paul said, "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing" (Romans 7:18). We all fall, mess up, make bad choices, and sin. God reminds us in Titus 3:5, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost."

Christ's death on the Cross, as seen in our verses today, is the sole payment that could be accepted for salvation. God's justice demanded a spotless sacrifice for the sin committed. The only perfect One who could have paid the price of sin was Christ. It is through His shed blood that we are forgiven of sin and guaranteed a home in Heaven for all eternity.

Like Clara Barton offered Teddy Roosevelt supplies if he only asked, God offers us salvation if we will only ask. He stands with arms outstretched, His free gift of salvation in hand, and offers us eternal life if we will only ask Him for it. No strings are attached. No monetary payment is necessary. No good works can earn it. All we must do is receive Him.

“Wait on the Lord.”
- Psa_27:14

It may seem an easy thing to wait, but it is one of the postures which a Christian soldier learns not without years of teaching. Marching and quick-marching are much easier to God’s warriors than standing still. There are hours of perplexity when the most willing spirit, anxiously desirous to serve the Lord, knows not what part to take. Then what shall it do? Vex itself by despair? Fly back in cowardice, turn to the right hand in fear, or rush forward in presumption? No, but simply wait. Wait in prayer, however. Call upon God, and spread the case before him; tell him your difficulty, and plead his promise of aid. In dilemmas between one duty and another, it is sweet to be humble as a child, and wait with simplicity of soul upon the Lord. It is sure to be well with us when we feel and know our own folly, and are heartily willing to be guided by the will of God. But wait in faith. Express your unstaggering confidence in him; for unfaithful, untrusting waiting, is but an insult to the Lord. Believe that if he keep you tarrying even till midnight, yet he will come at the right time; the vision shall come and shall not tarry. Wait in quiet patience, not rebelling because you are under the affliction, but blessing your God for it. Never murmur against the second cause, as the children of Israel did against Moses; never wish you could go back to the world again, but accept the case as it is, and put it as it stands, simply and with your whole heart, without any self-will, into the hand of your covenant God, saying, “Now, Lord, not my will, but thine be done. I know not what to do; I am brought to extremities, but I will wait until thou shalt cleave the floods, or drive back my foes. I will wait, if thou keep me many a day, for my heart is fixed upon thee alone, O God, and my spirit waiteth for thee in the full conviction that thou wilt yet be my joy and my salvation, my refuge and my strong tower.”

Philip P. Bliss - Composer/1838 - 1876
Born: July 9, 1838, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.
Died: December 29, 1876, Ashtabula, Ohio. Bliss and his wife died in a tragic train wreck caused by a bridge collapse. He survived the initial impact, but went back into the flames in an unsuccessful a­tempt to rescue his wife.
Buried: The remains retrieved from the Ashtabula disaster were placed in a common grave marked by a cenotaph in the Ashtabula Cemetery. A cenotaph in memory of the Blisses was also erected in the cemetery at Rome, Pennsylvania, July 17, 1877.

Francis Ridley Havergal was born on December 14, 1836, at Astley, Worcestershire, England. She was the youngest child of the Rev, William Henry Havergal, a minister of the Church of England. Her father was also a noted poet and church musician. Miss Havergal had training in linguistics and music. Although she was a highly educated and cultured, Miss Havergal always maintained a simple faith and confidence in her Lord. It is said that she never wrote a line without first praying over it. Her entire life was characterized by spiritual saintliness. In spite of being always frail in health, she lived an active and productive life until her death at the age of forty-three.

As part of her education, Francis studied in Dusseldorf, Germany. In the art gallery of that city hangs the famous painting by Sternberg, ”Ecce Homo,” a vivid portrayal of Christ, wearing his crown of thorns, before Pilate and the Jewish mob. Beneath the picture are the words, “This have I done for thee; what hast thou done for Me?”

While visiting the museum and seeing the painting, Miss Havergal was humbly moved. After gazing for a considerable time at the painting she took a pencil and scrap paper and quickly wrote the stanzas for this hymn. Later, while visiting her home in England, she again noted the words she had hurriedly scribbled, but felt the poetry was so poor that she tossed the paper into a stove. The paper, is said to have floated out of the flames and landed on the floor, where it was later found by her father. He encouraged her to keep the words and composed the first tune for the text.

Francis R. Havergal is also author of the hymns “Take My Life and Let it Be” and “I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus.”

8/29 Trail of Blood

20. The extreme limit of this little book precludes the possibility of saying much concerning these councils or law-making assemblies, but it is necessary to say some things.

21. The first of these Lateran or Western Councils, those called by the popes, was called by Calixtus II, A.D. 1123. There were present about 300 bishops. At this meeting it was decreed that Roman priests were never to marry. This was called the Celibacy of the priests. We of course do not attempt to give all things done at these meetings.

22. Years later, 1139 A.D., Pope Innocent II, called another of these Councils especially to condemn two groups of very devout Christians, known as Petro-Brussians and Arnoldists.

23. Alexander III called yet another, A.D. 1179, just forty years after the last. In that was condemned what they called the "Errors and Impieties" of the Waldenses and Albigenses.

24. Just 36 years after this last one, another was called by Pope Innocent III. This was held A.D. 1215, and seems to have been the most largely attended of possibly any of these great councils. According to the historical account of this meeting, "there were present 412 bishops, 800 Abbots and priors, Ambassadors from the Byzantine court, and a great number of Princes and Nobles." From the very make-up of this assembly you may know that spiritual matters were at least not alone to be considered.

At that time was promulgated the new doctrine of "Transubstantiation," the intended turning of the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper into the actual and real body and blood of Christ, after a prayer by the priest. This doctrine among others, had much to do with stirring up the leaders of the Reformation a few centuries later. This doctrine of course taught that all those who participated in the supper actually ate of the body and drank of the blood of Christ. Auricular confession--confessing one's sins into the ear of a priest--was another new doctrine seemingly having its beginning at this meeting. But probably the most cruel and bloody thing ever brought upon any people in all the world's history was what is known as the "Inquisition," and other similar courts, designed for trying what was called "heresy." The whole world is seemingly filled with books written in condemnation of that extreme cruelty, and yet it was originated and perpetuated by a people claiming to be led and directed by the Lord. For real barbarity there seems to be nothing, absolutely nothing in all history that will surpass it. I would not even attempt to describe it. I will simply refer my readers to some of the many books written on the "Inquisition" and let them read and study for themselves. And yet another thing was done at this same meeting, as if enough had not been done. It was expressly decreed to extirpate all "heresy." What a black page--yea--many black pages were written into the world's history by these terrible decrees.

25. In A.D. 1229, just 14 years after the last awful meeting, still another meeting was held. (This seems not to have been ecumenical.) It was called the council at Toulouse. Probably one of the most vital matters in all Catholic history was declared at this meeting. At this it was decreed, the Bible, God's book, should be denied to all laymen, all members of Catholic churches other than priests or higher officials. How strange a law in the face of the plain teaching of the Word, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." (John 5:39)

26. Yet another Council was called to meet at Lyons. This was called by Pope Innocent IV, in 1245 A.D. This seems to have been mainly for the purpose of excommunicating and deposing Emperor Frederick I of Germany. The Church, the adulterous bride at the marriage with the State in 313 in the days of CONSTANTINE THE Great, has now become the head of the house, and is now dictating politics of State government, and kings and queens are made or unmade at her pleasure.

27. In 1274 A.D. another Council was called to bring about the reuniting of the Roman and Greek branches of the great Catholic Church. This great assembly utterly failed to accomplish its purpose.

Matthew 27:11-12

Sometimes the best response to an attack is a silent prayer for those attacking you.

Many people during the era of World War I were well-acquainted with the name of Georges Clemenceau. Known for his work on the Treaty of Versailles, the Prime Minister of France helped in much of the peace negotiations at the end of the war. On the day he was to meet with United States President Woodrow Wilson, Clemenceau was shot by French anarchist Emile Cottin. After Cottin shot at Clemenceau once, he continued to fire six more shots as Clemenceau was shoved into a car and driven away. Only one of the shots struck Clemenceau, and he soon recovered from the wound. Cottin was captured and sentenced to death for the crime, but in a surprising act, Clemenceau objected to the sentencing. He stated his reasoning as such: "We have just won the most terrible war in history, yet here is a Frenchman who misses his target six out of seven times at point-blank range. Of course this fellow must be punished for the careless use of a dangerous weapon and for poor marksmanship. I suggest that he be locked up for eight years, with intensive training in a shooting gallery."

While Clemenceau's humor permeated his request, he was sincere in his desire that Cottin not be put to death. Despite being shot and knowing the future danger he might incur from the decision, Clemenceau voiced his desire that Cottin remain alive.

What an unusual reaction for a man who had been shot at and perhaps could have died. But notice an even more unlikely reaction in our verses today. Christ was beaten, bruised, mocked, scorned, and taunted; yet He responded to these unwarranted actions with silence. Jesus had command of all the angels in Heaven and could have commanded the death of those beating Him with one breath, yet He responded in silence.

Look at how 1 Peter 2:21-23 describes the account, "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously." Christ left us an example of how to respond to attacks-He did not respond in anger.

Have you ever been around someone who attacked you without merit? Perhaps it is someone who seems to continuously slander your name or wrongfully accuse you. Christ left us an example of how to respond in those situations-silent love. There are times when an explanation may be a necessary response, but Jesus desires that we not respond harshly or out of anger.

How do you respond to those who attack you? Do you immediately throw up a barrier and begin attacking them? Consider Christ's reaction to the attacks on Him. He reviled not, nor did He respond in anger. He opened not His mouth. Sometimes the best response is a silent prayer for those attacking you.

Take time right now to commit to following the Lord's example in your reactions. Ask God for help in responding correctly, even when your flesh wants to fight back. Remember as you go about your day today that God's desire is for you to treat others with the same love He shows you.

8/29 The Blessing of the Mournful

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Mt. 5:4)

Oh the sweetness of the comforting of the Lord. No one likes affliction, but in light of God’s comfort, and if that is what it takes to get it, then we can rejoice in afflictions. Much is gained through sorrow.
Solomon teaches us that sorrow is better than laughter, (Eccl. 7:3), He says that It is better to dwell in the house of sorrow than the house of mirth. This is because we are strengthened more in sorrow than in gaiety. There is more character in the sorrow, because the gaiety is folly, it feeds the immediate, and pleases the flesh, but does nothing for the spirit. (See Eccl. 2:2 and 7:4 also). This is from the wisest natural man that ever lived! A sad countenance is better than a laughing spirit.
Most men find it hard to mourn, especially in a public place, and yet, Jesus tells us that those who mourn are “blessed”. Let us enjoy the laughter when it comes, but learn from the sorrow, and hold it in our hearts. Don’t focus on the laughter all the time, though desirable, but focus on that which builds and strengthens us through the many obstacles that life throws our way. Yes, blessed are they that mourn, because God shall see to it that they are blessed.
We too often read this as a “neutral” statement, and forget that it is a promise! God promises to bless those that mourn. It seems that we have an inroad then to obtaining God’s blessing—just learn to mourn, along with these other “be” attitudes, of course, but we are blessed for each one of them, and not necessary all of them collectively. In other words, there is a blessing for the poor in spirit, as well as they that mourn. These qualities are often hard to come by until we have grown in the Lord for many years, and been through many battles, but any of them will obtain God’s blessing, but the more we have, the greater the blessings! Oh the wonder of it all.
Mourning roots itself in compassion, while laughter is merely selfish emotion. Laughter exalts our own folly, and brings a temporary, short-lived joy to our hearts, but mourning is permanent, and reflective. Mourning builds compassion from which it came, but laughter builds only false dreams and paper ideals. Yes, sorrow is better than laughter; it is remembered longer, and makes us stronger in patience and determination. Laughter is preferred, but sorrow is the better of the two.

“Have mercy upon me, O God.”
- Psa_51:1

When Dr. Carey was suffering from a dangerous illness, the enquiry was made, “If this sickness should prove fatal, what passage would you select as the text for your funeral sermon?” He replied, “Oh, I feel that such a poor sinful creature is unworthy to have anything said about him; but if a funeral sermon must be preached, let it be from the words, ‘Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness; according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.’“ In the same spirit of humility he directed in his will that the following inscription and nothing more should be cut on his gravestone:-

WILLIAM CAREY, BORN AUGUST 17th, 1761: DIED - -
“A wretched, poor, and helpless worm
On thy kind arms I fall.”

Only on the footing of free grace can the most experienced and most honoured of the saints approach their God. The best of men are conscious above all others that they are men at the best. Empty boats float high, but heavily laden vessels are low in the water; mere professors can boast, but true children of God cry for mercy upon their unprofitableness. We have need that the Lord should have mercy upon our good works, our prayers, our preachings, our alms-givings, and our holiest things. The blood was not only sprinkled upon the doorposts of Israel’s dwelling houses, but upon the sanctuary, the mercy-seat, and the altar, because as sin intrudes into our holiest things, the blood of Jesus is needed to purify them from defilement. If mercy be needed to be exercised towards our duties, what shall be said of our sins? How sweet the remembrance that inexhaustible mercy is waiting to be gracious to us, to restore our backslidings, and make our broken bones rejoice!

17. I again call your attention to those upon whom the hard hand of persecution fell. If fifty million died of persecution during the 1,200 years of what are called the "Dark Ages," as history seems positively to teach--then they died faster than an average of four million every one hundred years. That seems almost beyond the limit of, human conception. As before mentioned, this iron hand, dripping with martyr blood, fell upon Paulicians, Arnoldists, Henricians, Petro Brussians, Albigenses, Waldenses and Ana-Baptists--of course much harder upon some than others. But this horrid part of our story we will pass over hurriedly.

18. There came now another rather long period of Ecumenical Councils, of course not continuously or consecutively. There were all through the years many councils that were not Ecumenical, not "Empire Wide." These Councils were largely legislative bodies for the enactment or amendment of some civil or religious (?) laws, all of which, both the legislation and the laws, were directly contrary to the New Testament. Remember these were the acts of an established church--a church married to a Pagan government. And this church has become far more nearly paganized than the government has become Christianized.

19. When any people discard the New Testament as embracing all necessary laws for a Christian life, whether for the individual Christian or the whole church, that people has launched upon a limitless ocean. Any erroneous law, (and any law added to the Bible is erroneous) will inevitably and soon demand another, and others will demand yet others, without ever an end. That is why Christ gave His churches and to preachers no legislative powers. And again, and more particularly, that is why the New Testament closes with these significant words,

"For I certify unto every man that heareth the words of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the Holy City, and from the things which are written in the book." Rev. 22:18, 19.

NOTE: We insert here this parenthetical clause, as a warning. Let Baptist Churches beware of even disciplinary and other varieties of resolutions, which they sometimes pass in their conferences, which resolutions might be construed as laws or rules of Church government, The New Testament has all necessary laws and rules.

And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man."

Matthew 26:69-72

Don't let your mouth profess Christ while your life denies Him.

There are a plethora of sports in our society. But notice something different about one of them. While there are different types of cars and different types of racing, the Indianapolis 500 speedway has a unique practice. It is no secret that racing is a dangerous sport and some drivers have even died while racing. But at the Indianapolis 500, no driver has been pronounced dead at the speedway. Drivers have crashed there and been pronounced dead later, but officials have made it a rule that no one is to be pronounced dead at the track. No memorials are set up for them, and the speedway's museum contains no list of drivers who have died at that location. As racer Scott Goodyear states, "You don't go look at where it happened. You don't watch the film on television. You don't deal with it. You pretend it never happened." In fact, track officials have embraced this idea, and when a crash occurs, the track closes for a day and crews paint over any evidence that a crash has taken place.

Many people want to ignore the fact that people have died at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. While that seems sad or callous, what is even more sad is when Christians act like the crew at the speedway-painting over any sign of Christ in their lives.

Sadly, many Christians are Christians in belief only. They believe that God is Lord, that Jesus died for their sins, and are trusting Christ for salvation, yet they don't show any other signs of Christianity. They may attend church each week, but people at their workplace, or even their friends have no idea they are a Christian.

Have you ever met these types of Christians? Their mouths profess Christ yet their lives deny Him. These Christians are all too common in our world. Notice someone who also denied Jesus in our verse today. Peter had faithfully followed the Lord for three years. He had heard His sermons, studied His teachings, observed His miracles, and witnessed the lives He had changed. Yet because of the danger he faced, he denied Christ.

The devil is an expert at getting Christians to believe that claiming Christ will cost them more than they can give. He threatens their pride, reputation, comfort level, and way of life to convince them to keep Christ hidden in their lives.

If someone were to ask your friends if you were a Christian, what would their answers be? If a bystander were to observe your life for one day, would they witness your beliefs, or would your life say, "I do not know the Man"?

God shouldn't be Someone you only believe in, but Someone who has an affect on every aspect of your life. He should shine through every activity you partake in, no matter how mundane you think it is! God should be on the tip of your tongue, at the front of your mind, and constantly in your thoughts.

How well are you showing the Lord through your life? Does your life proclaim, "God has saved me and controls me!" or are your actions stating, "I do not know the Man"? Keep God in the forefront of your life. Allow Him to permeate every action, thought, and word you speak. Don't cover Him up like the pit crews, but proudly let the world know that you serve the all-powerful Creator of the world.

“Oil for the light.”
- Exo_25:6

My soul, how much thou needest this, for thy lamp will not long continue to burn without it. Thy snuff will smoke and become an offence if light be gone, and gone it will be if oil be absent. Thou hast no oil well springing up in thy human nature, and therefore thou must go to them that sell and buy for thyself, or like the foolish virgins, thou wilt have to cry, “My lamp is gone out.” Even the consecrated lamps could not give light without oil; though they shone in the tabernacle they needed to be fed, though no rough winds blew upon them they required to be trimmed, and thy need is equally as great. Under the most happy circumstances thou canst not give light for another hour unless fresh oil of grace be given thee.
It was not every oil that might be used in the Lord’s service; neither the petroleum which exudes so plentifully from the earth, nor the produce of fishes, nor that extracted from nuts would be accepted; one oil only was selected, and that the best olive oil. Pretended grace from natural goodness, fancied grace from priestly hands, or imaginary grace from outward ceremonies will never serve the true saint of God; he knows that the Lord would not be pleased with rivers of such oil. He goes to the olive-press of Gethsemane, and draws his supplies from him who was crushed therein. The oil of gospel grace is pure and free from lees and dregs, and hence the light which is fed thereon is clear and bright. Our churches are the Saviour’s golden candelabra, and if they are to be lights in this dark world, they must have much holy oil. Let us pray for ourselves, our ministers, and our churches, that they may never lack oil for the light. Truth, holiness, joy, knowledge, love, these are all beams of the sacred light, but we cannot give them forth unless in private we receive oil from God the Holy Ghost.

8/28 Isaiah 53

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (v. 6)

This verse has a story behind it: It is said that as D. L. Moody was boarding a train while rushing to his next speaking engagement, a man asked him how he might receive Christ as his Savior. Mr. Moody, being very much hurried, did not have the time to disembark the train and talk to the fellow, so he told the young man to Look up Isaiah 53:6, and enter in at the first “all” and come out at the last “all”. If we will take Mr. Moody’s advice, we too will find the salvation of the Lord, freely given to all men. This verse says it all. We are as sheep, who stray by nature. They need to be led.

Our Lord saw us as sheep, scattered among the hills. He knew that we were in danger of being ravished by a lion or a bear or wolf, but he knows too that He is our strength against such peril. We need to lean upon the Lord. He was despised, and at times we are too; He was smitten, as we will be; He was rejected and so are we; but He was our healing balm. (vs. 3 - 5)

The 53rd chapter of Isaiah, though a prophetic chapter, depicts the plight of Christ and mans attitude toward Him. Because of sin, we are not drawn to righteousness, as seen in this chapter. It is no wonder that man crucified the Savior who is the epitome of right and the holiest of the holies. We, from a wicked heart, will produce wicked actions; we all have rejected Christ at sometime in our lives, either by direct will or by our evil deeds.

Note that, as we are like sheep, He takes on the form of a lamb. The lamb “mothers” the sheep, and cares for them with all her heart. (v. 7) Jesus loves us like a mother loves her siblings. He “bore” us, as a woman in labor, and, spiritually speaking, He loves us because He suffered for us, and we belong to Him. All this for the transgression of his people, (v.8). We stray away as lost, and lowly sheep, but as a mother lamb, our Lord seeks us out, and brings us back. He knows the danger we could face, and keeps us close by His side.

>>(1) In the Nationalities: The Greeks mainly are Slavs, embracing Greece, Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia, etc., speaking Greek. The Romans are mainly Latins, embracing Italy, France, Spain, South and Central America, Mexico etc.

>>(2) The Greek Catholics reject sprinkling or pouring for baptism. The Romans use sprinkling entirely, claiming the right to change from the original Bible plan of immersion.

>>(3) The Greek Catholics continue the practice of Infant Communion. The Romans have abandoned it though once taught it as another means of Salvation.

>>(4) The Greeks in administering the Lord's Supper give the wine as well as the bread to the laity. The Romans give the bread only to the laity--the priests drink the wine.

>>(5) The Greeks have their priests to marry. The Roman priests are forbidden to marry.

Matthew 26:55-56

Your faithfulness to God will depend on your daily commitment to Him.

Have you ever wandered through a graveyard and read the headstones of those who had passed on? Most give a day of birth, day of death, and perhaps a short description of their lives. "Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Friend" "Friend to All, Foe to None" "A Great Fisherman"-the essence of a person's life is many times summed up in a few short words on a tombstone.

I remember visiting an old cemetery back East one time. As I wandered through the tombstones, I came upon one that caught me off guard. There was no day of birth, no day of death. No picture or fancy inscription. There was a single word carved into the tombstone over that body. The tombstone simply read "Faithful." The word that summed up that person's life was faithful.

As I read that tombstone, I wondered what that person had done to earn the title of "faithful." How much had they sacrificed to earn that title? What had they endured to be worthy of such an honorable word? But more than that, I wondered if I could be described as faithful at the end of my life. Would people look back and remember that I had faithfully served my Lord, even during the difficulties of life?

Think about the Christians who have remained faithful through history. Paul was beaten, stoned, left for dead, and suffered unbelievable difficulties. Yet he remained faithful. Early church leaders were persecuted for their faith, and some were even killed, yet they remained faithful. The Waldensians and many during the Middle Ages were threatened with unthinkable torture for professing Christianity, yet they remained faithful. John Bunyan was beaten and imprisoned for preaching the Gospel, yet he remained faithful. John Wesley was chased out of churches for his biblical views, yet he remained faithful. Early pilgrims had to leave their homes and travel to a new land to freely worship, yet they remained faithful. So many Christians who have gone before us have endured the harshest of treatment yet have remained faithful to God. What would it take to turn us away from the Lord?

One of the saddest moments in biblical history is relayed in our verses today. Notice the end of verse 56, "Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled." The men into whom Christ had invested three years of His life, the men Jesus had personally chosen to accompany Him, the men over whom Christ had labored, decided that standing with Christ wasn't worth the cost. They chose to turn from the Lord rather than suffer.

Too often Christians follow God when it's convenient for them. They want God's blessings so they attend church and read their Bibles when things are going well, but the minute Christianity begins to cost them something, they give it up. They aren't committed to God; they aren't faithful.

Take a minute to think about this question: What would it take to make you turn from Christ? What would have to happen in your life for you to turn your back on God? Like Peter, so many people refuse the thought of denying Christ, but stronger Christians than us have fallen in times of adversity. Only those who are completely committed to God will be able to remain faithful in all circumstances.

How strong is your faith? At the end of your life will people be able to describe you as "Faithful"? Trials will come and difficulties will arise, but God wants you to remain faithful to Him in spite of them. Spend time right now to recommit your life to God. Commit to remaining faithful to Him, even if everyone else turns away from Him. Remember that even though all forsook Christ, He faithfully faced the Cross for you.

“How long will it be ere they believe me?”
- Num_14:11

Strive with all diligence to keep out that monster unbelief. It so dishonours Christ, that he will withdraw his visible presence if we insult him by indulging it. It is true it is a weed, the seeds of which we an never entirely extract from the soil, but we must aim at its root with zeal and perseverance. Among hateful things it is the most to be abhorred. Its injurious nature is so venomous that he that exerciseth it and he upon whom it is exercised are both hurt thereby. In thy case, O believer! it is most wicked, for the mercies of thy Lord in the past, increase thy guilt in doubting him now. When thou dost distrust the Lord Jesus, he may well cry out, “Behold I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.” This is crowning his head with thorns of the sharpest kind. It is very cruel for a well-beloved wife to mistrust a kind and faithful husband. The sin is needless, foolish, and unwarranted. Jesus has never given the slightest ground for suspicion, and it is hard to be doubted by those to whom our conduct is uniformly affectionate and true. Jesus is the Son of the Highest, and has unbounded wealth; it is shameful to doubt Omnipotence and distrust all-sufficiency. The cattle on a thousand hills will suffice for our most hungry feeding, and the granaries of heaven are not likely to be emptied by our eating. If Christ were only a cistern, we might soon exhaust his fulness, but who can drain a fountain? Myriads of spirits have drawn their supplies from him, and not one of them has murmured at the scantiness of his resources. Away, then, with this lying traitor unbelief, for his only errand is to cut the bonds of communion and make us mourn an absent Saviour. Bunyan tells us that unbelief has “as many lives as a cat:” if so, let us kill one life now, and continue the work till the whole nine are gone. Down with thee, thou traitor, my heart abhors thee.

1 John 4

“We love him, because he first loved us.” (v. 19)

I have said it before, and will no doubt say it again, “Love responds to love.” Our children only love us because we first loved them! Think of it; when we nurture them, and coddle them, they quickly grow to love us, because of their dependency on us! When we learn to depend on Christ, we will learn to love Him. Love grows from dependency.

God created in us the need for dependence, so that we would, through dependence, demand love. If someone else would have responded with love to our need, we may have loved them instead! I think of our children, and newly born babies, they know not how, nor whom to love! They respond, because they are dependent on us, to whoever meets the need! They learn to love the one who provides for them, no matter who that may be, whether the mom, or the nurses in the hospital, etc., they will grow to love the one that cares for them. Our dependence demanded love, and thereby drew the love of God out of Him, but it was because He implanted the need within us in the first place! Just as we need to be needed, God also needs to be needed, and repays us with love.

New born babies, while in the hospital, learn to love their nurses because they are usually the caregivers, at least at first. They wash them, and check them over, and perhaps are the first to clothe them. The mother then gets to “take over” soon, and the baby learns to love “momma”. Why? Because mom is the one who meets the baby’s needs. At that age, they don’t know what love is, they do not know really who is who, all they know is that this woman is meeting their need, whatever it may be. They learn to love whom they have depended on. When we find our love growing cold, and our heart being wrenched away from the Lord, we need see where our dependency lies. Are we fully depending on Him, or on someone else? It is so easy for us to transfer our dependency to another, but we need to focus on Christ, and trust Him, and depend on Him; it will help us to love Him more. Become dependant on the Lord, and you will love Him more.
