The Sureness of Scripture
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” -- Matthew 24:35
There is an old adage that only two things are sure in this life: death and taxes! Thankfully, we can praise God that there are other things that are sure, and that we can be fully persuaded of: the gospel saves, Christ rose again, God is on His throne, and Jesus is coming back just to name a few!
The reason we know that these events and actions are all completely sure is that we have the unchangeable, perfect Word of God as our authority! In our text for today, Jesus Christ said that the universe as we know it will pass away (Revelation 21:1), but His words will never pass away! The Apostle Peter, an eyewitness of Christ’s transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9), said that even though he saw that event personally, “we have also a more sure word of prophecy” (2 Peter 1:19). What is this “more sure word?” It is the Bible, “the scripture” (2 Peter 1:20).
The theories of men change constantly, but God’s Word stands sure, for ever (Psa. 119:89)! We need never to doubt anything that God has placed in His Bible. From Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, every word is important (Matthew 4:4), every word given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16), and every word preserved for us. In Proverbs 30:5-6 God tells us: “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.” We can have complete confidence in the sureness of God’s Word.
