Every Word of God
“And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” -- Luke 4:4
We live in a society of polls, top ten lists, and where we basically can do what we want to do. Sometimes we live by the court of public opinion rather than from what God says! In our text today, quoting Deuteronomy 8:5, Jesus said that we must live “by every word of God.” The Bible not only tells us about “things to come” (John 16:13), but how to live now, today. God’s Word should be our first stop when we need wisdom! We should never read into the Bible what we want it to say, but pray that God will show us things we need to know.
In II Peter 1:3, we read that God “hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” What this means is that God’s Word sufficiently provides us with everything we need to live a godly life in Christ Jesus. It is never God’s supply of wisdom that is deficient, but our application of what God has given us is where we often fall short!
We all have our favorite portions of the Bible. But if the scope of your commitment to the Word of God is only a Psalm 23, Proverbs 3:5-6 or even John 3:16 religion, you are missing out on God’s best. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (II Timothy 3:16-17) A mark of maturity is when we recognize the importance of “every word of God”
