Guarding the Landmarks

Deuteronomy 19:14
“Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.”

Beside my house, there are some stakes driven in the ground that have been painted orange on the top. These stakes are the borders of the property that I own. These stakes are the landmarks of my property and are placed there as a boundary between my property and my neighbor’s property.

God said in the verse above not to remove “...thy neighbors landmark...” God wanted His people to realize that everybody's inheritance is important. He warned them about moving those landmarks, for moving the landmarks was nothing more than stealing. The people during that day would usually use a pile of rocks as landmarks for their property. This pile was only comprised of a few rocks. If a person wanted to gain more property dishonestly, they would move those rocks a little at a time. The neighbor, if he did not keep a diligent eye on his property’s boundaries, would lose his inheritance a little at a time by this dishonest neighbor. It was important to keep watch over the landmarks of their inheritance.

As Christians, we need to keep watch over the inheritance given unto us. We must be careful that people don't try to change the inheritance given to us by God. For instance, we must be sure that people don't try to change God's Word a little at a time. We must be careful that people don't change the doctrines of the Word of God a little at a time. If we don't watch our spiritual landmarks people will move them, and before long Christianity will cease to be what it should be.

As Americans, we must be careful that people don't move the landmarks of our country. America has a rich heritage. Our inheritance is that for which our forefathers fought and died. The landmark of our inheritance is the Constitution, which when signed, founded the United States as an independent nation. We must be careful that liberal politicians don't change our inheritance for the advancement of their liberal agenda.

I want you to realize, that it is your personal responsibility to make sure your inheritance does not change. You are to keep a watchful eye over your inheritance. Too many times we rely on everybody else to keep the landmarks where they are supposed to be when it is our personal responsibility to keep watch over the landmarks of our inheritance. When someone tries to move those landmarks, you stop them. When someone tries to change the landmark of Christianity, you personally need to stop supporting them and any part of their ministry. When a politician tries to change the inheritance of your country, vote them out.

Let's not let the dishonest neighbor change our inheritance. Be vigilant and take personal responsibility over the inheritance given you, so that the next generation will enjoy the inheritance exactly as you have.
