Judges 10:6
“And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.”
Every person, organization and nation has their patterns that they go through. Sometimes these patterns are good, but many times these patterns are bad. Our goal in life should be to establish good patterns.
In the verse above we see the children of Israel had established a bad pattern. The Scriptures said, “And the children of Israel did evil again...” This pattern that the children of Israel had established was a destructive pattern. To this day it seems that they have never gotten away from the pattern of doing “evil again.” One of their mistakes is they never learned that this pattern they were in was a destructive pattern that they needed to break in order to keep God's blessings upon them.
Do you find yourself having a bad pattern to which you keep on going back? Instead of committing sin again, you need to get yourself to the point where you do right again. You need to get yourself to the point where you replace your bad patterns with good patterns. Let me give you a few helpful ideas about this thought.
First, most patterns are established in our youth. Parents, this is why it is very important that you break the bad patterns that your children have. If you don't work on breaking these bad patterns, then these patterns will most likely follow them for the rest of their lives. For many people, these patterns have a grip on them because they have done them for so long. You must not get discouraged in your battle to overcome these patterns. With God's help you can overcome any bad pattern that you have in your life.
Secondly, you can't break bad patterns by not destroying the temptations to those patterns. The reason the children of Israel had such a hard time was because they never completely destroyed all the gods of Baal. The only way you can overcome the bad patterns in your life is to destroy that which tempts you to perform that pattern. This will not always be easy, but you must destroy the temptation.
Thirdly, replace the bad pattern with a good pattern. If you get rid of the bad and don't replace it with the good, then you will eventually go back to the bad. Overcoming bad patterns is accomplished by establishing good patterns. You may purposely have to do this, but you must make good as much a pattern in your life as you made bad a pattern.
Take these three pieces of advice and follow them. Though this is just a surface piece of advice in overcoming bad patterns, these will help you. Ask God to help you to overcome your bad patterns and then go do your best to overcome them by establishing good patterns.
