Judges 17:6
“In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
A common phrase in the book of Judges is, “...every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” When a society only does what it feels is right, then they will end up having a godless society with no authority on which to base their decisions.
This is what had happened to the children of Israel after the death of Joshua. The godless acts of Israel happened because they were doing what they felt was right and not what God's Word said was right. When you look at the verse above a little closer, I believe you find out why these people were doing what they felt was right in their own eyes. Notice it says, “In those days there was no king in Israel...” I believe what happened to Israel was they placed their eyes on man instead of on the Word of God. They had depended so much on the leadership of Moses and Joshua that they felt they needed another national leader. Because there was no one to fill that vacancy for Israel, they all began to do what was right in their own eyes.
I point this out because we must be careful about following men and not God. Don't get me wrong, I believe God uses men to guide us in life, but our ultimate loyalty and guide of which to follow should be the Word of God. It wasn't that these people didn't have the Ten Commandments given to them through Moses; they did. The problem was they were following man instead of those commandments.
As a Christian, our guide in life should be the Word of God. Though we should be loyal to our preacher, our definition of right and wrong should always come from God's Word and not from some man. I ask you, whom are you serving? Are you serving God and following His Word or are you serving a man who is a servant of God? Though there doesn't seem to be much difference in this statement, there is a big difference. If you are following a man who is a servant of God, when he dies, you then have nothing to guide you in life other than your own senses. This is why we must always serve God and follow His Word instead of following man. God's Word will always be around and will never fail us. If we keep our eyes upon God and His Word, then we will always have His authority to tell us what is right and wrong in life.
Be careful in your life about following man. Yes, be loyal to those who are in authority and who are following the Word of God. But, be careful about being so loyal to man that you stop being loyal to God's Word. In your life, make a conscience effort to keep your eyes upon God and His Word.
