1/27 Strength for Today

1 Samuel 23:28
“And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.”

One of the greatest mistakes Saul made in his life is found in the verse above. Saul, instead of fulfilling the duties of his position, used his position to pursue his own agenda. What a great mistake this was! Because of this, Saul's selfishness in pursuing his own agenda enabled the enemies of God to invade the land, and no doubt, hurt many good people.

Pursuing your own agenda in life will always cause people to lose. In our day, many people think that the only way to get noticed is to push your own agenda. We must realize that life is not about what we want, but life should be about what God wants. Pushing your own agenda is a very hurtful act to the cause of Christ.

When you pursue your own agenda, you're not fulfilling God's will for your life. God's will for your life is not about you, but what He made you to do. Thus, when we are after our own agenda, we are vacating the position God wanted us to do and hurt the furtherance of His cause.

Pursuing our own agenda is also a very selfish act. When you are out to pursue your agenda, then you are making yourself the issue, which is very selfish and sinful. We must remember that God made us for a specific reason. That reason may not be about what we want. So when we don't fulfill our duty of what we were made to do and pursue what we want instead, this is a very selfish act.

Another thing we notice from the story above about pursuing our own agenda is that others will be hurt by this act. Saul's selfishness in pursuing his own agenda hurt his nation. Anyone who lives for themselves will hurt those around them. You may not hurt them on purpose, but your lack of doing the job God made you for will always hurt those you could have helped if you wouldn’t have pursued your own agenda.

One other thing you should notice is that this act allows the enemy to win. Christian, we are in a spiritual battle. When we leave that battle to pursue our own agenda, only one thing comes out of this and that is victory for the enemy.

The answer to this problem is found in Matthew 6:33. God tells us in this verse that if we will put Him first, He will make sure all of our needs in life will be added to us. The answer to getting what you need done in life is to pursue Christ's agenda. When you put Christ first, you will find that He will help you out in your life.

Be careful about making life all about your agenda and what you want. Make your life about fulfilling the will of God. When you fulfill God’s will, you will further the cause of Christ and will also find that He will meet your needs.
