2 Samuel 12:5
“And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:”
As humans, we tend to fall into the trap of being blind to how bad our sin is to God and us. Many times I find that people will have two categories of sin, your sin and my sin. Your sin is always very bad and my sin is not that bad. Sometimes our sin is the exact same sin as another person’s sin, but because we commit this sin, it is not that bad. The problem with this mentality is that God does not categorize sin as good sin and bad sin. To God all sin is bad.
David fell into this trap when it came to the sin that he committed with Bathsheba. To reveal to David how bad his sin was, God had the Prophet Nathan tell him a made up situation to find out the judgment for the person who supposedly committed this sin. When David heard the story Nathan told him, he became angry and commanded the person to be killed. That was when Nathan revealed to David that he was the guilty culprit. Once David realized how bad his sin was, he immediately got right with God over this sin.
I have found that the sin people get the most passionate about is the very sin they are committing. For instance, it is usually the weakness that a parent has that is corrected the strongest in their children. This isn't always the case, but many times we will correct our own sin and weaknesses in others before we will correct them in ourselves. When it comes to sin, we must take ourselves out of the picture to see how bad the sin is that we are committing.
Christian, you know what your sin is. I don't have to tell you what it is and neither does anyone else. Because you are saved, the Holy Spirit has already shown you your sin and convicted you of it. Instead of getting upset at everyone else for committing the same sin you do, you need to get upset at yourself for committing that sin.
You will never overcome your sin until you face how bad your sin is. As long as you justify it in yourself, but take it out on others, that sin will control you. If you ever want to overcome the sin that has constantly nagged you for many years, you must look at your sin honestly and see how bad it truly is.
I believe if you would see how bad your sin is, you will then begin to work at overcoming that sin. Instead of justifying your sin, face it and face how bad it is. Once you do this, you have completed the first step to overcoming sin in your life.
