1/4 Strength for Today

Numbers 9:19
“And when the cloud tarried long upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of Israel kept the charge of the LORD, and journeyed not.”

When the children of Israel were in the wilderness, God led them by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. No doubt, these pillars were comforting for the children of Israel for many reasons. One of those reasons is that they knew they had God's protection about them. Another reason would be they knew as long as the pillar was about them that they had God's blessings and presence upon their lives.

In the verse above, God told Moses when the cloud “tarried long upon the tabernacles” that they were not to move. God told Moses that they were to stay put and continue doing what they were supposed to do as long as the pillar abode upon the tabernacle. One of the principles that God was teaching us through this story is that when God's blessings are upon us; don't change what we are doing.

One of the mistakes people make quite often in the work of the LORD is when God is blessing them, they try to improve upon God’s blessings. You better be careful about improving upon what is already working. If you try to improve upon what is working, you may improve yourself out of the presence of God. Let me explain what I mean.

Many churches in the past had God's blessings upon them. These churches saw God begin to grow their congregation and give them many souls for their labors. This growth was exciting for a while, but eventually they got used to seeing the blessings of God. Then they tried to improve upon what got the blessings of God upon them. This improvement changed them into something that took God's blessings from them. Though they were sincere about changing what they were doing to do more for God, they should have kept doing what brought God's blessing upon them in the first place.

We need to realize that we can't improve upon the old-time religion. You can't improve upon soul winning, separation, old-fashioned preaching, prayer, Holy Spirit power and the methods of church growth and Christian living found in the Scriptures. You can't improve upon what God is already blessing. Christian, if you have God's blessings upon your life, don't try to improve what got His blessings upon you in the first place. Just keep doing what brought those blessings upon your life. Churches need to be careful about trying to improve upon what brought God's blessings to them. Churches should keep repeating the actions that brought those blessings. Likewise, nations that have had God's blessings upon them should not try and “improve” what brought God's blessing upon them. These nations should just keep doing whatever it was that brought the blessings of God upon them.

Watch yourself that you don't try to improve upon what already works. If it is working, then don't fix it. In trying to fix something that is already working you may end up causing it not to work. Instead, let's keep doing what brought God's blessing in the first place, for if we do those things, we are sure to keep His blessings upon us.
