2 Samuel 14:25
“But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.”
When looking at the life of Absalom, it is amazing for what this young man was known. In the verse above we see that Absalom was known for his beauty. In the next verse it even talks about how long his hair was. Speaking as a man, I would not want to be known for my beauty and the length of my hair. Absalom is what we would call a pretty boy. Here was a young man who was more concerned about his hair than his character. Here was a young man who was more concerned about what he looked like on the outside more than what he looked like on the inside. Here was a young man who wanted to be known for the wrong reasons. My advice to anyone reading this is to watch out for the pretty boy.
The pretty boy is normally one who is all out for themselves and their recognition. In other words, they will do anything do get in front of the crowd. They are not as concerned with their character as they are with being recognized. You will find the pretty boy won't do work that will get them dirty. The pretty boy has a greater possibility to be a disloyal person because of their desire for recognition. What I am saying is watch out for the pretty boy.
Ladies, let me caution you not to turn your boys out to be pretty boys. Don't get me wrong; I believe young men ought to be taught the importance of grooming and looking sharp. What I am against are mothers who won't let their boys get roughed up playing sports. What I am against are mothers who constantly gripe at their boys for getting dirty. Mothers, getting dirty is what boys do. Stop flying off the handle every time your little boy gets a “boo boo.” That is good for him because he is a boy. You will be much happier if you turn out a young man instead of a pretty boy.
One other word of caution to the young lady who is looking to marry. Don’t marry a young man who is a pretty boy. Young lady, when you end up marrying a pretty boy, you will find that he will be more concerned with looking pretty than keeping a job. You will find the pretty boy is not one who is a hard worker. You should be more concerned with his character than his looks. Character will do more to help you to have a happy marriage than good looks. Good looks won't pay the bills. Good looks won't take care of the responsibilities at home. When looking for a young man to marry, run away as fast as you can from the pretty boys.
Let's watch out for the pretty boy. Let's be a people who would rather follow character than looks. Let's be a people who turn our young men out to be men and not pretty boys. The destination of a pretty boy is usually heartache, so let's follow character instead.
