2/2 Strength for Today

1 Kings 1:5
“Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.”

The story in the verse above happened at the end of David's life. David was an old man and had not declared which of his son's would become the next king. Adonijah assumed and wanted to be the next king, so presumptuously, he declared himself the king. This presumptuous act was followed by many of the people following him, only to find out that the man God had anointed to be king was Solomon. This foolish act of Adoniram eventually cost him his life. The foolishness of this act was that Adoniram, being a man, declared himself the next leader. The foolishness of the people was that they followed a man's declaration and not God's declaration.

Let me make this very clear, God declares national leaders not man. Romans 13:1 teaches us that God is the One Who ordains the powers that be. In other words, for man to declare a man to be a national leader is wrong, for that declaration belongs only to God.

Throughout my life I have seen this happen several times. As humans, we tend to think we must have someone on the national level who can lead our churches. Truthfully, Christians need to realize that God is the One Who we should follow. I understand that God has used men, and will continue to use men to lead people, and sometimes nationally, but our ultimate loyalty to follow someone should be a loyalty to God.

When a man declares another man to be the one who is going to be a national leader, you need to be careful about assuming this is going to happen. As I previously stated, I have seen this happen before only to see a person not become what everybody thought they would become. When you see someone declared a national leader, you would be wise to keep doing what you are supposed to do, and that is obey the Word of God. Don't get caught up in following a man; get caught up in following God.

Furthermore, only history will tell us who the leader of an era truly is. Many times men who were national leaders never knew for a long time that they were national leaders. Likewise, the people who were under that man did not know that he would be a national leader. They were more concerned with fulfilling their responsibilities than trying to nationally lead. Most of the time, the one who spiritually led nations was not the one whom everyone thought would be the next leader. God usually takes an unknown person and allows them to rise to the top. The reason for this is because God gets the glory and not man.

My caution to everyone is to be careful about looking for another national leader in Christianity. Just do what God has commanded you to do and let God be the One Who declares who should become a national leader. It is always better to let God do His anointing and declarations than for man to do so. Man has feelings involved because of loyalties. God knows who is best for the job. So our part should be not to get too wrapped up in man's declaration, let’s get wrapped up in fulfilling God's commands. If that day comes when God chooses to make a person a national leader, then that is God's business, not ours.
