Nehemiah 2:1
“And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.”
One of the most important ingredients of life is a good attitude. Having a good attitude has a lot to do with whether or not a person will be successful. Your attitude will determine your outlook on life, and your outlook on life will determine your effort towards the things you do in life.
Years ago I took some training to become a pilot. When my instructor was teaching me about the instrument panel in the airplane, one of the instruments was called the attitude indicator. The attitude indicator is a very important instrument in that it shows the pilot whether he is going up or down. This attitude indicator becomes very important in the clouds, for when you can't see where you’re going, you want to be sure that your attitude indicator points in the right direction. Though we don't have an instrument installed on our body that tells us which way we are going, I do believe that everyone around us can tell what our attitude is like.
Apparently Nehemiah had a good attitude most of the time. According to the Scriptures he always had a good attitude in front of the king. This is why when he was sad this caught the king’s attention. If Nehemiah had a bad attitude all the time, the king would not have noticed his disturbed spirit. Because Nehemiah was a man with a good attitude, he was able to accomplish much in life for God.
Your attitude in life is your choice. A person who has a bad attitude is a person who chooses to have a bad attitude. A person who has a good attitude is a person who chooses to have a good attitude. Just like a pilot in an airplane chooses that attitude of that plane, every person chooses their attitude as well.
If you are going to have a good attitude all the time, you must determine not to let the circumstances in life control you. You cannot have a good attitude when circumstances determine your attitude. Nehemiah didn't live in good circumstances, but he still had a good attitude. A good attitude is a choice you must choose to have everyday.
Furthermore, you won't have a good attitude when you spend time with people who have a bad attitude. Your attitude in life is greatly influenced by those whom you spend time with. If you spend time with people who have bad attitudes, then you will have a bad attitude. If you spend time with people who most of the time have a good attitude, then most likely you will have a good attitude as well.
One other thought concerning your attitude. Just like the attitude indicator was important in the clouds, when the clouds of life come your way when you can’t see where you are going, you better have a good attitude. A good attitude in the cloudy times of life will bring you through the clouds to where the sun shines.
Which way is your attitude indicator pointing? Does it predominately point up or down? Remember, attitude is a choice. Everyday you must choose to have a good attitude. Ask God to help you on a daily basis to have a good attitude. When you have a good attitude, you will see life becomes more enjoyable for you and for those whom you spend time with.
