5/2 Strength for Today

A Sure Path to Destruction

Jeremiah 48:26
“Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the LORD: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.”

Moab's beginning was humbling to say the least. Moab was founded upon an intimate relationship between Lot and his daughter. Nothing is more humbling than knowing that your start came from an incestuous relationship.

From the time of their beginning to the time of Jeremiah's prophecy in the verse above, God had blessed Moab in a great way. From their humble beginning in the verse above, God blessed them with political strength in verse 25, and wealth in verse 36.

In the verse above Moab made a destructive mistake. It says in the verse above that Moab “...magnified himself against the LORD...” The word “magnified” means, “to make larger.” In other words, the destruction of Moab was that he made himself larger than God. Moab forgot the humble beginnings from whence God brought him and came to a place in his existence where he looked at himself and magnified himself because of what he had.

According to the Scriptures, God requires one thing of everyone in Micah 6:8 when It says, “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Notice that God requires man to walk humbly with Him. When a man or nation magnifies themself against the LORD, they are on a path that will surely lead to destruction.

Watch yourself that you don't let your heart become lifted up in the successes that God has given to you. If we are not careful, we'll allow our wealth and possessions to magnify ourselves against God. If we are not careful, our ministries can become large enough that we will magnify ourselves against the LORD. If we are not careful, we will allow the influence that God has given to us to magnify ourselves against Him.

Keep yourself in proper perspective. Don't allow the blessings that God has given you to magnify yourself, but instead stay humble and give God the credit for everything that you have. Remember, God can take away everything you have in a moment. Walk humbly with God by keeping yourself in proper perspective and you will avoid magnifying yourself against God, which is the path that leads to destruction.
