Keeping Financial Focus
Matthew 6:25-32

God doesn't promise to overflow your bank account, but promises to provide for your every need.

The story is told of a young man who was courting a young lady, and visited the lady's parents for dinner one night. After dinner, the mother told the father to take the young man into his study and learn more about him. The father did so and began by asking the young man what he planned to do in life. "I am a Bible scholar," replied the young man. "I see," said the father. "And just how to you plan to provide for my daughter? How will you buy her a nice house to live in?" The young man responded without missing a beat, "I will study, and God will provide for us." "And how will you buy her a wedding ring such as she deserves?" "I will continue on in my studies and God will provide." "And how will you provide for my grandchildren?" The young man replied, "Don't worry, sir, God will provide." After a while of discussion, the father returned to the mother who asked how the talk went. The father answered, "He has no job and no plans, but the good thing is he thinks I'm God."

About the time you prioritize your finances and establish financial purpose, the devil will cause you to worry about the future. If you have children, thinking about providing for them, paying for college, setting aside money for weddings, and helping them with any financial needs they might have can become daunting. Even those without children can focus on future financial burdens. But as Jesus continues His teaching on finances in Matthew 6, He takes time to reassure us that if He is good enough to care for animals and inanimate objects, He is good enough to care for the children He loves.

Keeping God first in your finances doesn't mean suffering financial lack. It simply means trusting God for your provisions. The world would have you believe the only way to secure your financial future is through amassing as much money as you can. While financial investing and planning is very beneficial, God wants you to look to Him for provision.

"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Jesus states that the lilies of the fields are adorned in more richness than arguably the richest man to ever live, King Solomon. Why is that? Because the lilies don't worry about their future; they don't strive to gain, but trust God.

What is better than having all the riches of the world? Trusting God for your financial riches. Remember God's promise of provision. He doesn't promise to overflow your bank account, but to provide for your every need.

Too many people think the purpose of life is found in monetary gain. As a Christian, realize that God's purpose is found in His glorification-especially through your finances. God will not let you suffer for putting Him first. He will not neglect or forget you. As you seek to glorify Him with your finances, He promises to bless you. Claim His promise of provision and put Him first in your financial life.
