Organizing Yourself Spiritually, Part 1 of 4

One of the things that I want to be more than anything else in my Christian life is spiritual. I believe that every Christian should desire to continually be growing because none of us will ever arrive spiritually.

You won’t be a spiritual Christian, wife or mother just because you want to be these. It must be something that you daily work at and be constantly trying to improve on.

Your children learn by example, so that means if you are going to produce spiritual children and create a desire in them to serve the Lord, then you must lead by example. Are you living spiritually so that your children can see how they should serve the Lord?

You can’t live off of someone else’s spirituality; it must be your own. I have talked with wives who are struggling and feel they are about to drown in issues with the home and even in parenting. As I talk with them, it becomes evident that they are living off of their husband’s spirituality. They don’t have time for devotions because they are chaotically running around after the children, working, and caring for the home. If you are going to be spiritual, then you must spend time with the Lord!
Young people won’t be spiritual just because they have spiritual parents. Wives won’t be spiritual because they have a spiritual husband. Churchgoers aren’t spiritual because they go to church. If you are going to be spiritual then you have to plan to be spiritual.

Let me share some ways that you can plan to be spiritual.

1. Have a scheduled time to read your Bible.

You grow spiritually by learning and reading, but you have to have a scheduled time to do this. Do you have your Bible reading scheduled into your day? If you don’t, you more than likely have days you do and days you don’t read the Bible. It’s important to be consistent so that you are used to your scheduled time.

The Bible is our textbook for life, and each day we will grow from the truths we read. How long should you read your Bible? Until it burns! I personally don’t stop reading until I know I have something that will stick with me throughout the day. Sometimes I may not feel I received much out of my reading, but it’s amazing to me how many times what I read that morning is something I really needed for a specific situation that very day.

Don’t be afraid to write and underline in your Bible. You do this with a textbook, and it helps you to remember things of importance. There are many references that I want to be sure to come back to that stir me to do better or encourage me in an area in which I may be struggling. Underlining those verses helps me to do that.

Be sure to memorize your Bible. Some people have the mentality that once they have finished school it’s not important to continue to memorize the Scriptures. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” I have to keep hiding God’s Word in my heart to help me to be the Christian I need to be. So many times someone will come to me with a problem, and immediately a verse I memorized pops into my mind. I can share that verse with them because it’s been memorized.

If you truly want to be spiritual, you have to read God’s Word. God’s Word changes lives. It can help each of us to defeat the problems we are facing, and It can change anything that needs changing. If God is going to change your life, you have to be in His Word. We spiritually grow by staying in His Word.
