Organizing Yourself Spiritually, Part 4 of 4
6. Be spiritual in your church duties.
Whether you are a nursery worker, Sunday school teacher, bus worker or the lady who cleans the church, people watch you and look up to you. Make sure each thing you do in the church is done to the best of your ability.
Do you participate in the church services by using your song book, singing, paying attention and using your Bible? Do you make your children sit with you? My parents had a rule that we only sat with them, and we do the same thing with our daughter. This helps us to stay focused on the service because we aren’t worried if our daughter is misbehaving in church.
Too many children sit in church and talk, pass notes or even text during the service. Sometimes it’s not even the young children, it’s even your single college-aged adults or even you as the parent. Remember, children learn by example, and if they see the adults texting and not interested in the service, then they will think it’s okay to do.
Do you let the preaching stir you to do more, to change you and grow you? Or do you spout off about the sermon on the way home because you’re upset with the preaching and you let your children know you don’t agree with the preacher? If you are upset with the sermon, it’s usually because it struck a conviction cord inside of you.
Do you get excited and want to be a part of each special thing your church does? Are you the one who has to pop everyone’s bubble and tell them that a full day of soul winning means that they will be out all day, and with church tomorrow, your children will be grumpy and tired? Your non-participating spirit discourages others from participating.
If you truly want to be a spiritual Christian who loves the Lord, serves Him, and has a walk with Him, you cannot be satisfied with where you are spiritually. I desire a closeness to the Lord, and it doesn’t come by accident. I have to pray for the Lord to keep that burning within me. You must do the same. Are we always going to be the spiritual Christian we should be? No, we are human, and I know I have my days when I feel the Lord must wonder about me. When those days come, just get up the next day and beg the Lord to help you get back on track and to keep that closeness with Him.
