Mt. Moriah (Gen. 22)

Mt. Moriah is called the “Mountain of sacrifice”. It is where Abraham offered his son Isaac, and God provided a ram instead. Isaac was Abraham’s only (legitimate) son, and remains a wonderful picture of Calvary and the sacrifice of God’s only begotten Son for our sins. In this sense, Isaac was a type of Christ. This “test” was for Abraham to see his faith before God. It was not that God wanted to see what Abraham would do, as many teach; God already knew what Abraham would do, long before he was even born, and He knows us through and through too. I find it amazing that Abraham was willing to sacrifice this child of promise so easily, without hesitation. Isaac was the hope of Israel.

It was here that Abraham called God “Jehovah-jireh” which means “God that provides” What a lesson for each of us! God will provide! Abraham believed that God would provide, not only that He could, but that He would. This is true faith. God, the God of promise, the God of all provision, will provide for you as He did for Abraham. What is the need that God will not provide? You will not find it. In v. 5 Abraham leaves his servant with a jackass and tells him, “I and the lad will go yonder”…then he says, “we’ll be back” (not a quote). Abraham had the faith to know that God would provide. When we truly believe that our God is faithful to provide for us, sacrifice is made easy. Our praises can be considered a “sacrifice of praise” for Him, and our thoughts, prayers, works, and our “all” can be laid at His Holy altar of grace. Though the main theme here is a picture of Calvary, and sacrifice, this could be seen as the Mount of God’s Provision.

Not only is Moriah the Mountain of sacrifice, but it is seen as the mountain of provision. God came through for Abraham, and He will always come through for us when we need Him the most. This mountain is also where God appeared to David in 2 Chronicles 3:1, and where Solomon built the temple of the Lord. Many believe that it later became the very mountain where Christ was crucified, Mt Calvary. Jesus will still meet us at Calvary, will you be willing to meet Him there?
