11/10 Devotions from God’s Word

John 16.1-16 – Who guides you in truth?

Jesus is teaching the disciples about the coming Holy Spirit:

Verse 12 – Here we see that Jesus is instructing and there are many things on His heart. It could be that He wanted to say something but couldn’t, because of the time not being right. Could this be that the Holy Spirit is being commissioned here? God, through the Holy Spirit will teach us through the natural course of life. The events that we go through, the scriptures read, the sermons heard are all part of the revealing message of Christ for our lives.

Verse 13a – Spirit of Truth, what a name. Do you wonder why God said it this way? It means a whole lot when you are thinking about it in the direction that God is going with this passage.

Isn’t awesome to know that there is a Truth? John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” What is the point of this passage? If we look at the whole thing starting at verse 1, we see that Jesus is preparing the disciples for when He is to “…go away…”. From this we see that Jesus needed to go so that we could get the Comforter, which leads us in getting the Spirit of truth.

There are two truths that People believe in:

  1. Relative Truth: This means what ever will be will be. There is not higher authority in giving the truth. It is what is right for them at a particular moment. This is more on feeling that on actual facts.
    1. We must realize that the truth may not be what we want to hear…

  1. Absolute Truth: This is where we should be. This truth is something that we need to hold onto to, and be guided in. This means that there is a higher authority of truth and we need to follow that authority.

Verse 13b – The second thing here is we are going to be guided in this truth. Last year has been filled with desire to know where God’s wants me, and how am I going to get there. There is a purpose to what God has, Ecclesiastes 3.

The problem is that we are guided by truth, but where are we getting our “truth”

John 17:17-19 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.”

It is really sad to say that there are preachers in our day that claim Christ, but are not getting the truth from Christ. They are not taking the time to find the truth through Christ, because some of them don’t believe that the truth is in Christ! In Romans 1, if we start messing with the Word of God we are messing with truth. I see out day in Romans 1. They have change the Word of God into a lie…

Verse 14 & 15 – This is awesome, Jesus says that when God gives it to Him, he will shew it to us! It = truth. The way that we ought to go… The thing that we have to remember is that we have to realize that we are told to do things know, Jesus revealed it to us, if we are not doing this now why would He give any more?

-WHAT MAKES THE WORD OF GOD TRUTH IN YOUR LIFE?

-HOW DO MEN STAKE THEIR LIVES ON IT?

Because we are sanctified by it, use it, apply it, and memorize it!

2 Corinthians 13:8

“For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.”

Ephesians 5:9

“(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)”

Ephesians 6:14

“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;”

1 Timothy 2:4

“Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”

Jesus showed the truth in action when He was here on earth. The Holy Spirit will continue this task of guiding in all truth. This brings an important topic and one that some people may or may not agree with. We need to be in God’s Word each and every day. There should not be a day that we should not have made time to be with God. This is when John 14.26 comes into play:

John 14:26

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

Three things here that we need to help us find how it is so important. The first is that the Comforter will teach all things. This is when I am reading my bible and the Word of God is convicting me, or that I gain understanding of what a passage is talking about. This is where I get my doctrine. The second thing is that I will be reminded of what I learned. I could be going some where and just start thinking of God’s Word and what I learned that day, or previous times. I could be witnessing to someone, either for salvation or dedication, and God will bring His Word back to me as I have read it in the past. The last thing that we see in this verse is that the leading of the Holy Spirit will not be in contradiction of what Jesus says. The Holy Spirit will be in perfect unity with the scriptures and we if we are “being” led into contradiction with the scriptures WE ARE WRONG.

This leads into John 14.6; this will show that there is only one way to go, God’s way through Jesus Christ. There is no other way to go. This is the way that God has created and we need to submit our lives to that!

John 14:6

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

In these four verses I see a great deal of information on the truth, the leadership of God, through His Word in my life. Then in my personal study, I find that truth is something that I can hold onto. Truth is something that I can have. God will, I believe, will freely give it. I think to myself: “Self how am I going to be used of God?” This is exemplified in Exodus 18.

In Exodus 18, Jethro, Moses’ father in law, imparts some wisdom to Moses and I believe a standard that is meted out.

Exodus 18:21

“Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:”

How many will I be able to handle? The questions I first must ask myself according to the verse above are:

  1. Am I able? In God’s power we are all able
  2. Do I fear God? Total reverence to God and His power.
  3. Am I a man or woman of Truth? Do I follow the Blessed Book (KJV)
  4. Do I hate Covetousness? Dishonest gain or profit.
