Peace with God ~ Philippians 4.4-7
Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
In this verse as I read it, I noticed that there needs to be a way to get this peace that God is talking about here, and there is.
In verses 4-6, they show us how that we can have this peace of God:
- (v4) “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”
- The first thing is rejoicing. Here there word rejoice is being cheerful or well off. Can we be cheerful for what the Lord is doing I our lives? Have we accepted Jesus as our Saviour? We must claim that God has given us the victory and rejoice in that! (Romans 8.31, 1 Corinthians 15.51-58)
- (v5) “Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.”
- This moderation is a gentleness in ones life. From the Greek word there is four other verses that will help understand this meaning of moderation
1 Timothy 3:3 “Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;”
Titus 3:2 “To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.”
James 3:17 “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”
1 Peter 2:18 “Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.”
- (v6) “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
- “Be careful for nothing…” This carries the idea that we need to consider all things in:
- Prayer ~ Communication with God (Earnestly)
- Supplication ~ Begging, a continual praying
- Thanksgiving ~ Gratitude (Belief in answered prayer)
Matthew 6:5-7 “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”
Luke 18:1 “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”
Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”
So, with these attributes the peace of God will rule our lives. 1. The only way to rejoice is to be His child ~ Accepting Jesus as your personal Saviour. Have you ask Jesus to save you? (Romans 10.9-10, 13)
2. The only way to gentle or moderate is to have God’s character. This happens when we get close to God in our relationship with Him.
3. Pray is showing total dependence on God for all aspects of life. The THANKSGIVING part is being thankful for God listening to our prayer and answering them according to His will.
In these verses we can see that God would like things in our lives for us to draw on His peace to keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus and not our own.
