5 Ways to Have a Merry Christmas
by: Allen Domelle
Can you believe it? Christmas is here again! It seems that every year Christmas comes and goes so fast, and many never seem to enjoy this great season. Society has commercialized Christmas so much that people are frantically trying to stay up with all the parties and purchasing of gifts, and they miss the enjoyment of the season.
This should not be the case with any Christian. More than any other time of the year, Christians should enjoy the Christmas season because it is supposed to be about Christ. There is no better time of the year when we have the opportunity to talk about Christ without most people being offended. Most people accept the fact that Christmas is about Christ. Though you will always have to deal with the politically correct crowd, the majority of people seem to celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus Christ.
When I look at the first Christmas, I find that it was not filled with the festivities that we celebrate today. You can read about the first Christmas in Luke 2:7 when it says, “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” The first Christmas was not about anything else other than Christ. It is interesting on this first Christmas that the innkeeper had no room for Jesus. There was certainly a good excuse for this innkeeper not to have room for Jesus, but if he had known that the Son of God was going to be born in his hotel, I would imagine he would have taken the time to be sure that the first Christmas was the best Christmas. This innkeeper had no idea that this was the first and last Christmas that he would have.
You never know when your last Christmas will be celebrated. I don’t mean to be morbid, but there will come a time when you will celebrate your last Christmas with your parents, spouse, children or friends. Because of this, you need to make every Christmas that you celebrate an enjoyable one. If you knew this were the last Christmas you had with someone, you would make this one the most memorable. Well, why not make every Christmas the most memorable Christmas of all time.
God says in Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” God is teaching in this verse to give your best with everything you do for it will be too late once death comes. Therefore, you should do your best to make this Christmas the most enjoyable Christmas of all time.
I have always enjoyed every Christmas. I enjoy hearing the Christmas music as it always reminds me of Christ and my family. I enjoy pulling the tree down from the attic, as we always have used an artificial tree, and the family taking the time to decorate it. I enjoy the special candies and desserts that my wife and daughter make during the Christmas season. I enjoy shopping for those whom I dearly love, trying to find just the right gift. I enjoy spending time with family on Christmas day and watching the smiles on their faces when they get the gift they always wanted. I enjoy the great Christmas dinner that my wife always puts together. I enjoy the special things that our family tries to do for others during this season. I enjoy the Christmas lights as you travel through neighborhoods and the nativity scenes that people put in their yards. Truthfully, this is one of my favorite times of the year.
I would hope that you feel the same way about Christmas. I hope that when you think of Christmas that you have good thoughts as I do. Yet, Christmas can also be a very challenging time for some. With Christmas being the time of the year when we celebrate the birth of Christ, we should do everything we can to make this time of the year enjoyable. Let me give you five ways to help you enjoy this Christmas season.
