2/21 Through the Bible in Devotions

Genesis 24 loyalty

(Gen 24:12 KJV) And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham.

We see in this chapter, an extremely loyal servant. There is no need today for preachers to rant and rave about their people being loyal, loyalty responds to leadership.

Yea, better yet, loyalty responds to love. Love will produce loyalty, on both parties. Abraham was trustful of his servant, enough to entrust him with such a task and finding a bride for Isaac; the servant was loyal enough to want to please the master, and ask God to help him to do so, you see, loyalty is a two way street!

Loyalty is the greatest characteristic of the servant, it is essential to servitude. It is, in the church, born of love for the Master, and of His love for us. Our loyalty to Christ (faithfulness) is measured by our love for Him, the greater the love, the greater the faithfulness, or loyalty. Faithfulness and loyalty are closer than brothers, and are earmarked by humility. The servant prayed all the way to Laban’s house that God would direct him, and not his own wisdom, and God honored his loyalty to Abraham, and Himself.

We need loyalty in the church today; loyalty to our Lord, if not to His man. Loyalty is, as respect, earned, and not demanded. It is not even so much as mentioned in the Bible, but faithfulness is! We see it all the way through the Bible, faithfulness to our Lord and Savior, and to His work. One must be careful about too much loyalty to a man, but not careless in much faithfulness to God.

Loyalty to God is called “faithfulness” in the Bible, and He is the One we need to especially be loyal to. We need faithfulness more than ever today; since faithfulness is what God expects of us. Faithfulness is toward God, while loyalty is toward man; both are good, and both are needful, but we must distinguish, at times, between the two.
