John 2

“His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.”

This sentence, though short, becomes some of the wisest words anyone could speak, “whatsoever He saith unto you, do it”. The wisest of words from the humblest of ladies are words for each of us, every day. What else can we do but that which the Lord says to do? How could we call ourselves by His name and not wish to please Him? “Whatsoever” covers a vast field of thought and actions. If we fall short in this “whatsoever”, we miss the great call of God, and “we are of all men most miserable” (1 C0r. 15:19). The Lord expects total and complete obedience from His children. Mary’s words will ring through the portals of time, and ever echo into the lives of men and women unto every generation and people.

Notice that Mary spoke “unto the servants”, and yet, what are we? Are we not servants of the Most High? It is to the lowly that the greatest of tasks is given, and to the lowly will be the greatest of rewards. This was the first of Jesus’ recorded miracles, and yet it spoke multitudes of wisdom in the mere mention of it. Jesus turns water into wine. This miracle had never been repeated in the scriptures, as many others had, and it stands unique in that sense, that it belonged only to Jesus. You see, He, and He only takes the drab water of this life and fills it with “taste” and with joy. Water is essential to life, but wine is a luxury to be gained in a time of joy and gaiety; water is plain and tasteless, and rather bland, but wine is full of exuberance and appeals more pleasurably to the palate. At first glance, on the surface, this seems to be the lesser of Christ’s miracles that serves only as an introduction to His coming ministry, and yet it remains uniquely His miracle and delves into the great depths of blessing that He bestows upon those He loves, His sheep. The beauty of this passage is that there is hope for all of us when Jesus is present. The question is, where is your joy? Is it in Jesus, or in the waters of this world? Is He a refreshment to your spirit, and to the uplifting of your joy, or is He just “there”, residing in you in quietness and “hiding” in the background of your life? “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” what great advice for all of us.

There are several “key” passages and statements in the Bible that stand paramount to the others, and my friends, this is perhaps the master of them all. What greater advice could be given us than to do whatever the Lord says to do? The Lord chose a humble lady to birth our Lord on this earth, and the same lady was honored to speak perhaps the greatest of sentences in the entire Bible. What an honor is bestowed upon a righteous person! Mary was a sinner, just as we all are, but God chose to use her in a mighty way, and later to use her again in a simple, and yet profound phrase like “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it”. (Compare Nicodemus’ discourse in next chapter)
