John 9
“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (v. 5)
The world needs light. Years ago, before electricity was discovered, men used fire for light, but light was needed since the beginning of time. Some believe that the world was created in darkness, and this may be true. Until God said “Let there be light” what did we have? Probably darkness. It is all the same to the eyes of the Lord. Jesus was the Light of the world, but only “as long as (He was) in the world”, then there was darkness. The entire scheme was reversed. Originally, out of darkness came light, but when Jesus came, and left, out of that light came darkness. It is amazing that in this darkened, sinful world today, there is still s little light; that light is seen in the Children of Light, Christians. As long as we are in the world, we too are the light of the world, because Jesus is in us, and we shine to the glory of God. Where would our world be if it weren’t for light? Think of all the uses for light nowadays. It is a guide for us at night; it comforts us in the darkness; it functions as a tool when vision is obscured by twilight; it serves as a warning for us in caution and danger; it has a multitude of functions, and is so prominent that we could hardly function without it. The world is now enveloped in darkness, but, like stars in the sky, there are a lot of lesser “twinklers” all over this planet, shining brightly in their area for the glory of God. Praise the Lord for the Light of the world.
The blind man in this chapter saw the light, literally. He rejoiced greatly in that light, and in the fact that he could see it. His eyes were opened, and the first person he saw, or had ever seen, was Jesus. Glory! One day we will wake up out sleep and the first one we will see will be Jesus. The darkness of this world will flee away, and will fade into oblivion, but The Lord, and the Light will be everlasting. When the man asked “Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?”, Jesus answered “Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.” (vs. 36, 37). There was only one man that this guy had ever seen, and He knew who Jesus was then. The simple answer of faith that this man gave was “Lord, I believe” and the Bible says that “He worshiped Him.” Jesus, the Light, is worthy of our worship, if for no other reason, he is worthy because He is light.
