5/30 Devotions From God’s Word

Our Duty Series

Keep the Flame Burning

v19 “Quench not the Spirit.”

When we think of the word quench – what comes to mind? It is my favorite drink that I love to have after working hard in the yard or something.

In Ephesians 5.19 it takes the concept - to extinguish (literally or figuratively):--go out, quench.

Matthew 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:”

Luke 3:16 “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:”

Acts 2:3 “And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.”

There are three areas that are talked about when it comes the word Quench

Hell

Attacks of the Devil

The Spirit

Mark 9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

(Mark 9:46 Mark 9:48)

Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

1Thessalians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

The one I would like to concentrate on is The Spirit. How do we put the fire of the Holy Spirit out in our lives? First we must understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the role He takes in our lives. For this we must turn to John 16.7-8, here Jesus is telling is disciples (and us) the job of the Holy Spirit. Then in verses 9-11 – the explanation!

(CONVICT) (9) “Of sin, because they believe not on me;”

This is the conviction of how we are living our lives w/o Christ. This I believe is the conviction to salvation.

(CONVINCE) (10) “Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

This is the ministry of the Holy Spirit to testify to men that Jesus was right. He, the Holy Spirit will tell you that Jesus was sinless, and perfect.

1 Timothy 3:16 “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”

The Holy Spirit will make right in the hearts of the people what is the truth about Jesus. The testimony of Jesus relies in the hands of the Holy Spirit.

(REBUKE) (11) “Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”
