1 Thessalonians 5.21-22

Our Duty Series

This last “job” that we have in our lives as Christians is proving all things in our life. This is tied directly to the last topic of discussion

 The Work

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Here we have to know what the standard is. To be able to prove something is to know what the standard is. These two verses tied with v20 show the importance of Gods word…

Only by God’s Word will be know what is good or evil

 The Standard

1 Corinthians 2:11 “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.”

This is where we need to turn to the subject of what the Spirit of God will do in our lives. (John16)

This then we will know where the source of knowledge comes from…

 First Tasking

1 Corinthians 2:15 “But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.”

The word judgeth here means to interrogate, determine: ask, question, discern, examine, judge, search

This sends me to Ephesians 5.15-17

Romans 14 – everyman does things on their own thoughts on the way God wants them to go.

Romans 14:13 “Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.”

 Facts in life

1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

 Daily Living

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
