7/16 Devotions from God’s Word

In our time as Christians there may be times in which people may ask us what the 10 Commandments are for.  For today’s devotion we can look briefly into this thought.  The exciting thing about this is that God gives us the reason written in His Word.

Exodus 20.20

In verse 20 we have Moses’ answer to the question that is found in verse 19.

“…Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that is fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.”

i. Fear not – This carries the idea that when God is moving and doing things we need to be afraid of what is going on. God has given us a hope and when someone is afraid of what God is doing it could show two things

          1. That the person is not resting the promises of God as he/she has read all their life

          2. That the person is not save and is afraid of the unknown.

ii. “…for God is come to prove you…” – In this God is not come to destroy life as we know it. God is moving and things are shaping up for the next part of God’s plan. The question that needs to be asked is: Are you ready?

         1. To prove means to test. Take a moment and see the context of the passage that we have up to this point. There are two views

                   a. Verses 1-17 are from the view from the mountain and God giving the commands

                   b. Verses 18-20 are from the view from below looking up (possibly).

         2. What are we going to do with the law that God has given to us? The law should only be there in our lives to understand that we will not be able to be perfect – so these laws should direct us to Jesus.

                           a. Galatians 3:24-25 “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”

iii. “…and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.”

        1. This fear carries the idea of reverence or respect. If we respect and honor God the way that we should we will not sin.

             a. Deuteronomy 10:12 “And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,”

             b. John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

            c. John 15:10 “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.”

How do we view sin in our lives? If we look into verses 1-17 and really ask God to search our hearts – we will know where we are at. Are we willing to ask the question to get the answer that will lead us to a life that is a challenge?

The 10 commandments are here as we can see for us to look to Christ – for He is the only one that was able to never offend any one of them.
