8/14 Strength for Today

An Heart to Know
Jeremiah 24:7
“And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.”

Have you ever wondered why you have to go through the heartaches and struggles of life? In the verse above, God gives the answer to this question. The story from the verse above is about God showing Jeremiah two baskets of figs. God asked him what he saw, and he replied that he saw a basket of good figs and another full of “evil figs.” God said that the good basket of figs represented what He was trying to do with Israel. God sent heartaches, bondage, and had even brought them back home and rebuilt their city all for the purpose of them having a heart to have a personal relationship with Him.

Everything that God sends your way is to help you to have a better relationship with Him. God sends these hard times our way so that we can have a heart to know Him. Every bad thing that comes your way is there for the purpose of helping you to know God. Every sickness that God allows you to have is for the purpose of knowing Him in a better way. Every heartache that we have experienced and will ever experience is so that we can know God in a better way. Every struggle that we face on a daily basis is to draw us closer to God.

The best time to get to know God is during the hard times. When you study the Scriptures you will see that God is always there in the hard times. God was with the three Hebrew children in the fiery furnace. He was with Daniel in the lions den. He was with Job as he went through the great heartache of his life. Every time one of God’s people went through hard times, He was there to help them through it. That would mean that He is with you when you face your struggles and heartaches. One comforting thing you can take from the hard times is that God is trying to get to know you in a better way.

However, God has also sent the good things our way so we can know Him better. Every blessing that God sends your way is for the purpose of you getting to know Him in a better way. Every time you experience success in life, God allows it for the purpose of you getting to know Him in a personal way.

Both the good and the bad is there so that we can have a personal relationship with God. God wants to know you and to have a unique, one of a kind relationship. God wants every relationship with every person to be unique. Your relationship with God is different than your pastor’s relationship with Him. Neither is of less importance to God, for they are both very important to Him.

Christian, be sure to take the good and bad of life and let them give you a heart to know God. Don’t let these happenings be wasted, but use them so that you and God can have a personal and closer relationship with each other.
