David’s Prayer
Psalm 51
This is a very familiar passage in our bibles. I have done some study in it this week and God has opened some new truths I want to share.
Psalms 51:1-3 “To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.”
Mercy
In these first three verses we can see that David is acknowledging his sin. The first thing that he asks for is mercy. It is a wonderful thought that God has given to everyone that has, is, or will be born into this world mercy. It may be for one day, one month, or a hundred years. We cannot take this life that we have for granted. God has every reason to throw us into hell, He actually doesn’t need one. As David states here in verse 1, “…according to thy lovingkindness…” it is only by God’s love that we are not where we deserve to be. My hope in this that I can stay close to God, humble myself and remember what He has done for me.
Cleanliness
David here wants to be clean. He has been found out and now there is a desire in him to be clean. Sin is dirty and very heavy. The longer we hold onto it the more we will stink. Have you every found a gym bag that has some stinky clothes that were forgotten? The longer we hold onto sin – the more we will sink. Secondly, the burden of sin that we have on our lives is a weight that Jesus offers to take away. We need to put into practice one word – confession. Let us keep a short account of sin.
Acknowledgement
David in verse 2, I believe, ties all of this together. I am under the opinion that if we do not acknowledge our sin there is no way that we can experience the grace that God has given by blessing our lives, and being clean from all our sins. We will not have proper confession if we do not acknowledge our sin as God sees it.
Do we have a prayer time were we ask God to search our hearts that we may acknowledge and confess our sins? Let us all be totally dependent on God for our relationship with Him – acknowledge our sin and get right with our Heavenly Father…
