Esther 3:6
“And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.”
There have been people throughout history who are nothing less than evil. When I say evil, I am talking about people who want to kill many people for no other reason than their race. Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and others are just part of the names that belong in the list of evil people.
Haman should certainly be in this list of evil people. His desire to kill the Jews is nothing less than evil and wicked. The amazing thing about Haman was his rise to position without strong leadership skills. Though Haman was not a king, he held a very prominent role as prime minister in the cabinet of Ahasuerus. We can learn the characteristics of weak leadership from the life of this evil man. Though Haman held a high position, his leadership skills were very weak. Let me point out some of the characteristics of weak leadership that we find in the life of Haman.
First, Haman demanded honor. Haman wanted everyone to bow down to him because of his position, and even tried to demand that of people. Strong leadership doesn't demand honor, strong leadership earns honor. Just because you hold a position does not mean you instantly deserve honor.
Secondly, Haman used his position for people to serve him instead of using his position to serve others. Great leaders realize that the purpose of position is to serve those whom you lead. Leadership should never seek to be served. Instead, leadership should seek to serve.
Thirdly, Haman treated people differently according to race and status. Again, strong leadership treats everyone the same. Great leaders realize being just is part of their responsibility of being a leader. In your area of leadership you must be very careful about the treatment of people. However you treat one person is how you should treat all people.
Next, Haman measured his success by title and possessions. Strong leaders realize that their success is dependent upon how they follow the rules God has for them. When you have to display some title that you hold to get people to follow you or to get your way, then you are displaying your poor leadership skills.
Last of all, Haman always took the credit for everything that was good. Weak leadership will only take credit for the good and blame others for the bad. A strong leader doesn't always have to have the credit for success. In fact, strong leadership gives the glory of success to its followers and will take the blame when things go wrong. People are more apt to follow you when you allow them to get credit when things go well.
We are all leaders in some area of our life. Whatever area you lead in, be sure to avoid the characteristics of weak leadership. Those whom we lead need us to be strong so we can lead them down the path God has intended for them to walk.
