Wisdom from God
1 Samuel 23:1-5
God has His hands open to you, giving you wisdom.
Henry Ford was a famed automaker who made many progresses in the transportation industry during his time. He was also known as the inventor of the assembly line, a process that allowed him to produce vehicles at considerably less cost than his competitors. One day a part on the line broke, and despite Ford's best efforts to repair it, he had to call a specialist to fix the part.
The specialist tinkered with the machine for a few hours then flipped the on switch and the line came to life once again. A few days later, Henry Ford received a bill for $10,000 from the specialist. Shocked, the tight-fisted Ford wrote the specialist and asked why the bill was so large. The specialist wrote back, "To tinker with the part: $10. To know where to tinker: $9,990." Ford paid the bill.
This specialist didn't charge Ford for the actual action of fixing the part but for his expertise in knowing exactly what was wrong. There are many areas of expertise in our society. Some people are good with automobiles, others know how to fix a computer, and some are great at solving problems. But the ultimate source of wisdom and expertise comes from God.
In our verses, we see David continuing to flee the wrath of Saul, yet the chapter also reminds us that David was, even in his difficult times, in the protective hands of God. As the chapter opens, we see David receiving news that a nearby town of Israel was being attacked by a band of Philistines. This city was in the hill country not far from the cave of Adullam. In particular, the Philistines were stealing the already harvested crops. David had a desire to help, but helping would mean that his location would be disclosed. He truly needed God's power and wisdom in His life.
Do you ever find yourself in David's position-needing answers or direction? At times, we all need God's providential guidance in decisions to make, paths to follow, and situations to handle. Not one person can make it through life without God's wisdom.
Over the next few days we'll see David's reaction to this predicament. Does he disclose his location to help his countrymen and risk death to those with him? Or does he take the safest route and remain in hiding, allowing the Israelites to be overrun by the Philistines? David saw God's answer to his need of wisdom in three powerful ways-through prayer, encouragement, and His sovereignty.
If you stand in need of God's wisdom today, take James 1:5 to heart, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." God has His hands open to you, offering you wisdom. All you must do is ask.
God has all the wisdom you need. David asked for wisdom and found it. Solomon asked for wisdom and received it. Peter sought God's wisdom and was filled with His Spirit. Don't allow God's gift of wisdom to go unused, but seek His wisdom right now and allow Him to guide you.
