Genesis 31 Communion a Covenant
(Gen. 31:49 KJV) And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
Laban and Jacob had made a covenant of peace. (v.51) This is one of many Bible communions, and is symbolic of our relationship with our Lord today. In Gen 14, communion was a victory celebration, here it is a communion of peace, a “peace treaty” between two parties. In our churches today, it is exactly that, a “peace treaty,” as well as a victory celebration. It is much more than a service of remembrance, though that is important enough in itself. One would do well to study the Bible communions, and note what importance communion has in our lives today. This particular “communion” was sealed with a sign, a pillar of stones as a memorial of the pact between two parties, the commitment it exemplified to one another (v. 51,52), and for a reminder of the pact that was made there.
The peace of Christ is an everlasting peace, and Calvary it’s “seal”. Christ gives a “peace that passeth all understanding, (Phil. 4:7), which will keep our hearts and minds through Him. It is HIS peace, the peace He Himself enjoys with the Father, and in the Father, and is given unto us by Himself. Do you know this peace, the peace of Christ? (Jn. 14:27). Why spend your days and nights in turmoil and anguish of soul when you can have a peace like no man could ever give? Peace is an element of the fruit of the Spirit, and is given to us when we take Christ as our personal Savior. Do you know Christ as your Savior? Do you know the Peace of God in Christ? Just call upon Him today, and invite Him to be your Savior (Rom 10:13), the promise to you is peace and everlasting life.
This has been called a prayer, and men have capitalized on it, as men will, but the fact remains that God’s Word is true, and “The prayer of Mizpah” as it is called, is just as true today as it was a thousand years ago. Our God still watches over each of us. It was named Galileel (witness) and Mizpah (watch tower) as symbols of the Lord watching over them.
