The Cover-Up
2 Samuel 11:6-10

The consequences of covered sin are often much worse than of repented sin.

David's actions were fueled by lust and wrong thoughts. Deep down, he knew what he had done was wrong. His sin had taken him somewhere, I'm sure, he never wished to go. But after his initial act of adultery was committed, he was faced with a decision, "And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child" (2 Samuel 11:5).

David could have recognized his sin, repented, and come clean, yet he didn't. David sent for Bathsheeba's husband, Uriah, and sought to cover the sin by having him sleep with his wife. He choose to cover his sin rather than repent.

The events that took place after David choose secrecy over truthfulness led him down a long road of regret. Would David have faced fewer consequences had he simply admitted his mistake? Perhaps, but from his mistake we see a crucial lesson.

As humans, we will make mistakes. We will fall into sin. We do not resign ourselves to this fact or make excuses when it happens, but when we do sin, we are faced with a choice-to admit our mistake or cover it.

Before you choose to hide your sin, take a minute to think about David. Think about the pain he went through. You cannot cover sin and expect to return to normalcy. Sin will be found out, and the consequences of covered sin are often much worse than of repented sin.

Is there any sin in your life you are hiding? Why not admit your mistake, seek forgiveness, and return to living for God? The pains of admitting mistake now will be less than allowing sin to fester and create bigger problems in your life later.
