Exodus 3 A Burning Bush
“And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.” (v. 2)
The church today needs “burning bush” Christians! We need to be on fire for the Lord, and not become consumed to the extent that we “burn out”. The “fire of God” will give us zeal, boldness in the name of the Lord. I believe that a little of this type of fire got into Moses, as he boldly stood against pharaoh of Egypt. A fire not only gives off heat, but light; we need to be a light to lighten the ways of darkness all about us. We need the heat, yes, but we also need the testimony of the light, we need the continuity of the ever-burning flame of God. The oil of God does not run out, so the fire will never be extinguished. Let’s get on fire for God!
Now, seemingly in contradiction, we see that “God is a consuming fire” (Deut. 4:24; Heb. 12:29), yet we cannot be consumed unless it is by Him and in Him. “Our God is a consuming fire” indeed, and will burn deep into our hearts the right kind of love; peace that passes all understanding; joy unspeakable, etc. There are only three references in the Bible that use the words “a consuming fire” and all of these depict a Mighty, and Fierce God, part to consume enemies, and part to empower His own children.
In this bush, we are pictured as Gods servants, full of zeal; of the hot passion of winning souls; of changing lives with the Gospel, as well as lighting the way for the lost. All this while burning perpetually for the Lord. We cannot afford to burn out! The work is too important. Keep the fires burning, my friends, and keep the light shining so that others may see our good works and glorify the Father. We, as John, need to be a “burning and shining light” for the Lord, (Jn. 5:35), and can be if we will remove our shoes, and walk as if we were on Holy ground when we approach the Lord.
