What a Waste!

"What a waste of a great talent! She could sing professionally, instead she sings for her church.  What a waste!" fussed a coworker of mine about a Christian girl he liked.

"Why in the world do you want to go into the ministry? I have seen so many people give up great careers to be missionaries! What a waste!" complained a fellow church member when I told him I had surrendered to God's will to become a pastor. "There's no money in the ministry."

In today's verse, the disciples were angry, disgusted and filled with contempt that a woman would waste expensive ointment to anoint Jesus.  She did this as a sacrifice and expression of worship, but they felt it should have been sold and used to feed the poor neglecting Jesus entirely - yet, saying it was "the Christian thing to do."

They didn't really care about the poor, they just felt using the ointment in this way was a waste.  They felt she had done more than they did.  My coworkers didn't really care about the girl being successful professionally, they just hated to see her give of her talent to the Lord.  My fellow church member didn't really care if I made lots of money, he felt I should have the same priorities as he did.

In all eternity, what will really matter, giving one's talents to make money or to glorify the Lord? Why did the Lord give us talents and things?

'But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?" Matthew 26:8.
