I have a theory that boys have an
overactive stupidaline gland. This gland can remain productive far into
adulthood for some guys. When stupidaline kicks in, they do stupid things. The
kind of things that keep the show “Funniest Home Videos” on the air.
Even I have suffered from
stupidaline rushes. Not so much anymore, but when I was a boy I did. I remember
trying different stunts on my bicycle. Most of which didn’t go very well. Take
the time I decided to pop a wheelie off a picnic table at my friend’s house. My
mind pictured a really cool stunt, but reality stepped in and changed the
image. I struggled to get my bike up on the table, then hopped on. I pushed
off, put my feet on the pedals, pulled up on the handlebars and hit the ground
face first. Somehow the wheelie never happened. Stars floated around, pain
slowly made itself known. I could hear something, but what was it? Laughter?
Yes, my friend was laughing. His mother came outside and asked, “Why would you
do such a thing?”
It seems the sailors couldn’t
figure Jonah out. They asked him many questions and including, “Why hast thou
done this?” I know the answer. Stupidaline. I can learn from this passage that
running from God isn’t wise. In fact, it just could be actions spurred by
stupidaline.
“Then said they unto him, Tell
us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine
occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art
thou? And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of
heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly
afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he
fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.” Jonah 1:8-10
