My school bus driver stopped the
bus, applied the parking brake, turned around in his seat, stared hard at us
kids for a moment and then stood up. All eyes were on him as he walked down the
aisle stopping at every seat and looked intently at the kids. Silence permeated
the vehicle. He walked the length of the bus, turned and walked slowly up to
the front. No one wanted to be called out by him. When he was angry, he would
make the offending kid get off the bus and walk home. For some this would be a
few miles and there were no cell phones to call mom to come get him/her.
It seemed someone had thrown a
huge spit ball forward and it splatted on the windshield. “Who did this?” He
demanded. No one would say anything. He walked down the aisle again, studying
faces. The pressure was on. After what seemed like an hour, someone said
something almost inaudible. Fingers were pointing at one person. The driver
extracted an admission of guilt. He then asked the offender to exit the bus and
walk home. He then got in his seat and continued with the route. No one spoke
again.
We live in a society and time
where no one wants to accept responsibility. They just want to point the finger
at someone else. We like to blame the government, the president, somebody,
anybody else. Sometimes I feel the presence of God like I felt the bus driver’s
presence that day. Maybe some things really are my own fault. Hmmmm.
“And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots,
that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and
the lot fell upon Jonah.” Jonah 1:7.
