Good to the Last Foot


Joshua 4:18

“And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.”


One of the slogans of Maxwell House coffee is that it is “Good to the last drop.” Every one of their advertising campaigns quoted that slogan so that the consumers would think that the last drop of coffee that they drink will be just as good as the first drop that they tasted. They wanted people to know that they felt that every drop of coffee is tasteful.


I look at the verse above and realize that God's power is good to the last foot. In this story, the waters of the Jordan were overflowing its banks. It seemed impossible for the children of Israel to be able to cross over the Jordan River. God told the priests who bore the Ark of the Covenant to step into the waters. They obeyed, and as soon as their feet touched the waters, the waters were parted so that the children of Israel could pass over on dry ground. Yet, notice in the verse above that the waters did not return unto their place until the very last foot of the priests was lifted up onto the shoreline. God's power was good to the very last foot.


Christian, this should encourage you in many ways. First of all, God has the power to help you accomplish any task in your life. Thank God that we as Christians serve a powerful God. Just because the obstacles we face may seem overwhelming to man, it is in those very circumstances that God's power is revealed. The greater the obstacle and task, the greater God's power becomes.


Secondly, God's power is there to protect you as you obey Him. As the children of Israel were in the middle of the Jordan River, God protected them from the waters crashing down upon them. Their wives, children and cattle were all safe, even in the midst of the Jordan. When you see the raging waters about you as you do that great task of faith, keep on serving God; He is there to protect you from their dangerous powers. You need not fear when you hear the waters are about you, for God is with you in the midst of whatever you face. God's power is great enough to part the waters, and His power is also great enough to protect you in the midst of the waters.


Lastly, God's power will not run short for it is good to the last foot. In the story above, the waters of Jordan stood at attention until the very last foot of the priests stepped onto the shoreline. Christian, God's power is great enough, not just to get you started and to protect you in the midst of your task of faith, but to bring you all the way to victory. The greatest thing about the power of God is it will finish the job that it started out to do. Because God's power will not stop until the job is done, you need to be sure to finish the task of faith that you set out to do. God's power will be with you all the way until the task is finished.


So, are you facing an overwhelming task of faith in your life? Let me encourage you that God's power is there to help you. God's power can and will overcome any obstacle if you will just step out by faith and trust Him. Furthermore, God's power will honor your faith when you step out, but it will also be good until the very last foot steps out of the task that you endeavored to do for God. Don't hold back, trust God and He will bring you all the way through.
