How
different Malawi is from America! Our missions trip revealed many cultural and
economic differences. A white person automatically attracted attention. Kids
followed us around, fascinated in our appearance. There was a danger of getting
mobbed or robbed when in a marketplace. The locals knew that Americans had
money. A car meant a person was rich and that was true by their standards. It
took close to a local’s yearly wages to fill up the gas tank. At the same time,
the people we met were all friendly. And this was in the city, the bush would
be quite a culture shock, no doubt. It was a great learning experience.
I wonder
what it was like for missionaries years ago. They couldn’t do a survey trip.
They just left for the country by ship oftentimes. Not knowing the culture. Not
knowing how the people would receive them. Trusting in God for their health,
safety and sustenance.
Being a
missionary takes enough faith to embark on an adventure with God facing many
unknowns. Abraham believed God would supply and left his people, who thought he
was nuts. He would not see them again. Abraham’s faith showed itself in his
actions.
The question
I can ask myself today is whether my faith is apparent to others.
“And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was
called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and
not by faith only.” James 2:23-24
