“To get a head in business, you can’t be totally honest,” my
boss in the body shop explained when he charged a customer for a new part, but
installed used. He ruined his Christian testimony with the employees that saw
what he did on a consistent basis.
I’ve worked with people that would lie, cheat, backstab, and
take credit for other employee’s accomplishments because they wanted to get a promotion
or simply to keep someone else from getting one. Sometimes it worked, sometimes
it didn’t. It created a stressful environment.
It certainly is a dog-eat-dog world. Yet God expects
Christians to act differently. He wants us to be honest in business and He will
bring the increase. He expects us to put others first. In other words, He wants
us to quit scratching and clawing to get ahead, but rather trust in Him.
Oh, and He wants us to ask Him and not make demands. The
dog-eat-dog mentality is to state one’s case and demand a raise or promotion.
God doesn’t bless that attitude. He wants to bless, but cannot bless the
worldly “wisdom” taught by so many.
The thought is to depend on God, not on my schemes and
strategies.
“Ye lust, and have
not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye
have not, because ye ask not.” James 4:2.
