Annoying Faith
Frank was always frank in his
opinions, no matter how absurd. I visited Frank occasionally and never knew
what to expect. We would discuss the
Bible or UFOs or ghosts or whatever.
"Have you ever heard of vampires?
They live forever, you know." He asked me one day.
My mind stripped a gear or two
because this was a new one. Frank told
me of an autobiography he had read of a man who had been "turned"
thousands of years ago. This guy had claimed
to have been to every major historical event in the world and
"enlightened" the reader to the true facts of these events. Thus
began a discussion on the author's credibility.
We had a lively discussion when I
asked Frank how the author knew where to be and when to be there because many
historical events don't look all that important at the time. He argued that vampires
were more intuitive than humans and could travel easily and quickly throughout
the earth. He kept stretching things
until the "elastic" broke and the truth snapped him on the nose. Even
though the author didn't have any witnesses to back up his claims, Frank still
chose to believe the author - or claimed to just to annoy me.
In today's verses, Jesus is
telling a group of Jews about the credibility of His claims. He had just mentioned two credible witnesses,
John the Baptist and God the Father.
Now, He brings them to the Old Testament scriptures, which they trusted. He reminds them that they are the very
scriptures they trust for eternal life testify of Jesus.
The Jews did not accept Jesus
claims of deity, even though the scriptures they trusted explicitly spoke of
Him. Frank's newest ploy to rattle me could easily be discredited by common
sense and a little thought. However, the
Jews could not discredit the Old Testament without destroying their faith, yet
Jesus reminded them that they still denied Him. Is it really wise deny the
truth simply to annoy the other person?
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life:
and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye
might have life." John 5:39-40.
