Was Jesus Being a Jerk?
Why would Jesus, a good Jew, ignore
the Sabbath Day and do some works? He could have healed the man by the pool of Bethesda
any other day of the week. Did Jesus heal him to antagonize the Jews? Was Jesus
simply being a jerk? If He had another motive, what could the point possibly
be?
The Sabbath, the last day of the
week, was set aside as a day of rest. Jesus was making the point that the
Sabbath was originally instituted as a picture of something to come. Jesus is our rest: "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly
in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls" Mat 11:29 . In other words, Jesus is our Sabbath.
Jesus gave the man by the pool of
Bethesda physical rest from the
pain and misery of his malady and rest for his soul, as well. Jesus is my rest.
"And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay
him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day." John 5:16.
Note: Sunday is not the Sabbath.
Most Christians worship on Sunday, the first day of the week, because Jesus
rose from the dead on the first day of the week and because the churches in the
New Testament met on the first day of the week.
