“I’m not listening to you.” My
daughter shoved her fingers in her ears, stuck her tongue out and made a
la-la-la-la noise. She didn’t want to hear what her brother had to say about
something.
Kids. Sometimes they do
externally what adults do internally. Many today are just like the Jews that
Malachi was addressing. They asked, “Where is the God of judgement?” (Malachi
2:17). They had made God to be someone that loved them no matter their sin.
They chose not to listen to the scriptures and out of willful ignorance asked
that bonehead question.
God considered their question as
annoying as plugging one’s ears, sticking one’s tongue out and making noise. He
answers the question by saying He will come to them in judgement.
I wonder how filled with shock
and awe today’s Christianity will be when God comes in judgement. Because God
hasn’t done anything yet, many think He isn’t going to. God says He will not
tolerate sin forever – especially in His people.
This concept can be applied to me
personally, as well. I am not off the hook.
But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he
appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he
shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of
Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an
offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be
pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I
will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the
sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against
those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless,
and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the
LORD of hosts. Malachi 3:2-5.
