2-24-16 Consistently Inconsistent

Election time, blech! The candidates spend a lot of time talking about this and that, making promises and trying to convince me that their opponents are untrustworthy and inconsistent. At the same time, people look to them as if they should line up perfectly with their personal list of qualifications. I know, I am disappointed when my favorite candidate fails me by contradicting a previous statement. The candidates have lots of ammo against each other because they are all consistently inconsistent.

James reminds me that my Christ-likeness should shine through consistently. People cannot see Jesus in me if the devil is prominent. To claim to be a Christian then tell dirty jokes doesn’t work. To use profanity is inconsistent with Jesus. It’s like planting a tomato plant and expecting apples. How absurd!

It really troubles me how consistently inconsistent I can be. My faith can waver terribly. My attitude can change abruptly – and my utterances reveal this. I can go from praising God to worrying to singing praises to complaining all in a short amount of time.

Oh, how I need God!

“Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.” James 3.9-12.
